How I removed my engine
23 Nov 2011 18:18 - 23 Nov 2011 21:26
I borrowed a bike jack from a friend to get an idea for a comfortable height to make a work table.
But I found out that the engine got in the way, and that gave me an idea.
I have a bunch of hard wood laying around so I just started experimenting .
It came out pretty easy for just one guy, the big hang ups are the cam chain cover , exhaust studs ,
the lower engine mount by the kick starter and the lug for the oil filter.
I think I rotated it counter clockwise a little and tipped the jugs out to clear the cam chain
then lifted it to clear the filter lug and it fell out.
I highly recommend another person to hold the bike , add or move shims and help with the lifting,
and next time I will fasten stop blocks down to the board on ether side of the frame to keep it from moving around and straps are a good idea.
Another idea is to put the nuts on the exhaust studs to protect the threads and frame

with the kick starter on...i can pull one myself,,,,,a smart helper with an eye for his/her fingers ...can give a tiny tug on the stator and it is free....you did well...it can be pulled straight away on the kick stand if all bolts or pulled this too

That's an interesting way of doing it JD. Very creative.
I always like the "drain all the oil and then tip the bike over on a couple of tires" method. Unbolting everything is easy, and then lifting the frame off the engine is a breeze.
Of course then you do have to move the engine, but that's a possible topic for another thread.

Thanks guys,
The last time I had the motor out was in 87 right before the trip in my avatar,
and we used the lay it on the tires method, from what I remember it when well.
I was going to wait for my son to come home from collage to pull it when this idea sprung up.
The bike has been moth balled since 92 because of three kids and a mortgage.
Now that we are empty nesters it's time to be a little selfish.
I tried to get her back on the road two years ago but the work / money wasn't readily available so all I did was get her fired up and spray down all the nuts and bolts with penetrating oil .
Finally it's time and I am enjoying the hell out of working on it.
