125 hp. How?

Alright, I'm eyeing up a basketcase '77 KZ1000 for a long-term project. I'm envisioning a street bike that's just about squeezed to the max (but not all the way).

Cams, carbs (smoothbores), big-bore kit, proper porting (maybe a GPZ head?), Yosh pipe (maybe a titanium hand-bent replica ;) ), etc.

Modern suspension (I'd love a conventional fork and to keep the dual rear shocks), brakes, wheels and tires.

You know the drill, nothing too gaudy, but something that'll stand out in a crowd.

If you wouldn't mind sharing, what have you done to your engines? As much detail as possible would be beneficial: cam numbers, hp at the crank/wheel, carb size, cc's, porting job, etc. I'm thinking 125 is a nice round number that doesn't seem like it's unattainable. 125 hp at the crank of course.

If it has tits or tires, it'll give you problems!

Send your engine to Larry Cavanaugh, tell him what you want, you'll get it, and at a reasonable price. Plus it'll come back looking better than new.

No thanks, I like my power naturally-aspirated. No turbo, supercharger or nitrous.

125hp not a problem with the RIGHT combination of parts and proper assembly a "J" head would be a help for sure but this can be done with a KZ style head with out issue.

Do you just care about reaching 125 HP or do you want a motor with some grunt all the way through too? There's more than one way to go about the process....depends on what you're after.

If you have the extra money, go straight to the 1197 bore.

A set of Joe's PSP3x cams or Cam Motion Z4's in combination with a good head and some RS36's will make a 1075 motor haul that kind of ass but it won't have the grunt the 1197 will below 5K.

Jay's K435's will straighten your arms out and make you take notice if you don't mind going Shim Under for the valve adjustment.

Web's got a bunch of grinds that will do the job.

But know this, If you rode a hyped up 1075 then got off that and immediately onto an 1197 that was set up with less cam and a great head...you'd forget all about the 1075....trust me.....or don't :cheer:

slipper pistons--- pop tops..head work,valves, cams...modern 29's..light rims..530 conversion...hd clutch..gearing work....same thing as putting 125 into one without those items..maybe even faster...

EDIT: typed while Larry C was posting his reply..mine is a reply to the orig question imho and not in respsonse to larry who posted just before mine

That option definitely won't have the grunt below 5000 rpm, but they scream all the way to 16,000.
