Oil Cooler Possibilities!

What all oil coolers would fit a 1980 KZ1000?

I see a lot of different ones that look like they would work. Is anyone running a cooler off of another bike and what all did yo do to make it work?

If you can find a wrecked GPz1100 1981-1982 or a ELR, they have just about what you'll need. Fittings, mounts and hoses.

www.oldkawman.com
www.sudco.com
www.redlinecycle.com are places to look.

And:

I was on e-bay looking for something inexpensive. I know most don't come with the hoses and fittings but I can always buy those later.

Just got this one off of e-gay. It is chrome and black and is 10" Wide x 4" Tall. Don't know why it wouldn't work.

Now I read this link. Does this guy know what he is talking about?

newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Rec/rec...007-03/msg00025.html

Saying that the oil cooler don't do anything really and that they don't flow because pressure is the same in both hoses?

The ELR Kz1000/1100's and the 1981-1982 GPz's have oil coolers. The oil pressure is about 2.2 to 2.8 PSI, low pressure, high flow due to a roller bearing crankshaft.

The after market kits would take oil under pressure off the main oil gallery. There's a plug on the right hand side of the engine that they would remove and install a plumbing fitting to attach the oil line.

That plug is for measuring the oil pressure.... On my KZ anyways... :S

I can't speak for this guy but I know what I measured in temperature differences pre & post cooler on my 900 here in AZ @ 92F... I believe the same would happen when it's 115F :pinch:

He's correct about the cooling fan concept where stop & go traffic, cooler won't do a lot. But when 115F out, I stay in the pool, screw riding....

I have a complete factory setup off an '84 GPz1100 that I removed from a parts bike I purchesed a few tears back. I'll sell you the setup for short money as a member favor if you're interested.

Does the guy have any validity that the oil doesn't actually circulate through the cooler since both hoses are coming out of the same area and should have the same pressure?

I think what that author is saying is: you have a pipe, you tap into the pipe in two places and install a cooler in between those two taps. In that case, the oil is not directed through the cooler. you need to cut/block/remove the main line between the two taps. Then oil has no other place to go but through the cooler.

I'm not familliar with the installations but if you don't block the original oil galley then the cooler is worthless.

that guy missunderstands how they are hooked up. u need to modify the oil preasure sensor fitting to accept the oil lines so the oil has no choise but to go through the cooler.

Can't I just buy the new fittings (J motor) that fit on the engine to run the lines to the oil cooler without modifying anything?
