I got my cases split tonight. All the internal parts look new or nearly so. However after cleaning the upper case in the parts washer I came upon this bearing seat. It's #5 from the right. :(

The biggest crack extends down the side of the web about 1/2". I found the pin in the parts washer intact. I have no idea how long it's been this way. The bike has about 18'000 miles on it. Anyone seen this before? What causes it and what do I do now to fix it?

I would guess excessive endplay. Looks like time for new cases.:(

I have a guy that TIG welds stuff like that for me all the time. You're fine, stop worrying and pick up the phone. Just call around for a guy whos repaired aluminum heads, etc.

You dont need to replace anything, just repair. It will require some cleanup/finish work, but its alot cheaper than buying new cases!

I like your solution better than replace the cases. However when it rains it pours. I put the pin back in and wiggled it around a little and TINK!! :( It was only holding together by a thread. How good is your welding guy? I'll be on the phone Monday.

"If it hurts when you do that, then dont do that" :woohoo:

Its really not that bad. You can have that fixed up for practically nothing.

Hell, used cases are ~ $100 these days....
Don't ask how I know this....

Here in AZ, title is only off the stamped frame numbers... Not sure in your area.... May want to check out and figure what your game plan is...

As already mentioned, you can have it repaired but I seriously doubt you'll get it for the same price ~ $100...

Good luck

Can you point me to a source for $100 used cases? If I truly can find a set for a C-note or there-abouts I won't hesitate one second.

It's my understanding that the cases are machined as a set, top and bottom together. What are the odds of a '74 900 Z-1 matching up to a '78 KZ1000? The price is attractive tho. Thanks for the link. I'll send a question to the seller to see if he has the bottom half.

How 'bout them Badgers :woohoo:
