Valve Timing issue
27 Apr 2010 05:23
I can not seem to time the valves correctly on my Z1B. This is what I have tried to do. I put the crankshaft mark on the 1/4 TDC mark. Then I put the white dot for the exhaust cam in place. It is lined up where the valve cover comes off and the small end of the triangle. But the exhaust is trying to push a valve down and making it really hard to keep the white dot there. Next I put the white dot onto the intake cam on the 28th tooth mark. This is where it gets hard. The cam chain has no slack and it is hard to get it to seat. I get it to seat and tighten everything down and turn the engine over slowly and I hit valve. I can only rotate the crank about 50 degrees. I am at a loss of how to do it.

Your chain is most likely binding for it shouldn't be that tight.... See image on left for chain slack between timing gears...
The image on the right depicts where the cam lobe tips should be pointing in TDC 1/4... This image was taken from the right side of the engine....
Tips pointing at each other & parallel with the head decking....

I have chain slack when I tighten the cam caps down. It is pretty close to that picture. Its just when I am trying to seat the cams. Or should there still be plenty of slack then?

ok I figured out the timing part but I ran into another issue with it. I got all the slack like in the picture and the cams to look exactly like it. It was looking good until I started turning over the engine with my wrench. I got about 2 times around and it just froze. I checked my valves and non of them were down. So it must be something with the chain? I decided to go on through since it wasn't a valve and I heard my chain jump teeth. I used the automatic tensioner and thought I got the slack out. I guess not? So I am going to take it to a guy that knows how to time these engines and have him do it cause I just can not seem to get things right.

In case anyone from this thread is still listening, I thought I'd post my problem here because it is similar...
...Except I don't have any kind of mark whatsoever on my exhaust cam! I'm about to just try to match the picture in the book if I can't find one.
Any tips?

thats right , just follow the pics in the manual. the cam lobes must face oposite each other and have there centers line up with the valve cover surface.
the hardest part is getting the chain on the crank sprocket properly.make sure it is on the teeth and not alongside them.
good luck.

Word of caution, insure what side of bike, what lobes your looking at, 1/4 TDC versus 2/3 TDC etc....
As mentioned in my images, this was taken from right side of engine and your looking at # 4 intake & exhaust lobe... As Mark mentioned, from the left side, lobes would be 180 out from each other...
Follow the manual and you can;t go wrong.... I think anyways... :S
