I bought my Z1 for $2800. It was a demo with 84 miles on it. The Z1R went for around $4000. Smaller carbs, corked 4/1 exhaust, squared bodywork and a 1015 detuned motor. Wasn't much of a threat. Looking back, I like it and it set the pace for bike styles to come.

Z1R's were never designed for the race tracks although a few brave men did venture onto the tracks, made for the Bouvard Cruisers/Café Racers.

The 1978 D1's were useless for racing with 18" front wheels, small 13 litre tanks and wooden front anchors (remote reservoir) all these made for looks- Café Strips,

1979 D2 1980 D3 were slightly improved with 19" front and larger 20 litre tank.

The steering geometry was all wrong for racing, but fitting Z650 triple trees did help.

Stock 1979 D2 at the Aust 1979 Castrol 6 Hour Race with Graeme Crosby and Akihiro Kiyohara (think l spelt that correct) on board.

Those were the days.

That photo is Graeme Crosby from New Zealand. He is a bit of a legend in race circles from downunder. Won a senior mens Isle of Man TT, 2nd in a GP world championship, wins at Suzuka, Daytona 200... and then he quit just as he was getting going. His books a good read. Plenty of good Z1R race photos of him if you google search.

for enough money he will build you a bike as well

Crosby was more than a legend, just have a look at the picture, see the number plate?, he used to ride the bike to races. Check the brakes and swingarm> I remember this guy in Oz, a lot of people could also not believe he won a lot of races on a barely touched engine. So much for claims of swingarm and engine mods.
The Crawford bothers raced a fairly stock Z1R, how do I know?, we bought our bikes together, Greg ran the Z1R the week before his race and the only mod at that stage was the suspension to raise the bike for racing. They were also the only guys I could remember racing the Z1300. The same bikes were used to break the round Australia record, one finished with the record and the other drank more oil than fuel.
