I just went out to my Kz parts collection, and found a bag of 92016-043 nuts in the drawer marked KZ sprocket nuts.

That nut has a 30mm outside size, and a 20mm inner thread size.

I remember right, the early Z1's having a smaller outside diameter nut than like the Z1B's, and the Kz900's did. Maybe that was a 27mm nut size.

Now that nut is for the output shaft where the splines don't go all the way through the countersprocket. The MK II motors had a output shaft where the splines went all the way through the countersprocket. Those shafts used a different nut and lock tab.

If you are going with an after market sprocket and I am pretty sure you are , make sure that the lock washer you are going to use has a tab that lines up with the hole in you new sprocket.

I had to go with a newer version lock washer with a spline because the hole was in a different place than the stock sprocket :pinch:

all good info...i am call tuesday when the shop is open...they should have a tab/lock/washer and nut....who knows what the p.o used and i never checked it before ...went through two chains and figured i'd wait on a lot of stuff till i was ready to re-do this bike....

i will get the right stuff....i have seen a few different answers here...or am i messed up...

glad folks can take the time to help though...i used a big standard socket like i said on the MKII and i remember that the size was familiar to me as matching my spud wrneches when i was an iron worker for years...years ago...1 1/4 was a spud...but some were 1/18 so i can not recall now

my tape said 1 1/4 inches across the flats of the nut and i measure stuff all day at work...so 1 1/4 this nut is for sure....100%

Your nuts wall looks thicker , mine reads 1- 1/10 " which is a little less than an 1-1/8" obviously.
The one in the pic is off our kz650 but the one on the kz900 outdrive shaft looks the same.
and I ain't messin wit ya :silly:

Patton wrote: The 27mm refers to the shaft thread size = internal thread size of the nut.

The socket size to fit the nut is measured as distance between the flats, same as an open end wrench.

1.25" between the flats would be about 31.75 millimeters.
So a 32mm socket should fit the 27mm nut at hand.
And a 1.25" socket might also fit the 27mm nut at hand.

Depends, of course, on accuracy of the measurement between flats.
Measuring in millimeters (with a caliper) would be the better choice for determining metric socket size.

Important to use the correct snuggest fitting socket, due to the sometimes extreme force required to loosen the nut.

If the 1.25" inch socket fits without undue slop, it should work okay.

Good Fortune! :)

27mm is across the hex. 20mm is the thread. The later KZ's came with a 30mm head on the nut. Both are 20mm thread.

When you get ready to replace the engine sprocket, please remove the grunge from chain lube and who knows what in front of the sprocket. While you're in there, wipe down the clutch push rod with paint thinner. I hope the push rod seal is still good......

Glad you said that!!! Thats the first thing that came to mind when I saw the picture for the first time.

A pan with some Safety-Kleen solvent and a good brush would do wonders on cleaning up that mess!!!

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationGet this lug nut tool set and always have the right socket. I've had these for 10 or 15yrs and never found a large lugnut type nut this 9pc kit does not cover. I see not great reviews here and there, but I've used these a lot and been real happy with them.

 Perhaps when measured between opposite points instead of measuring between opposite flats.
