It is with the greatest remorse in my heart that I apologize for the tremendous bang this morning at 9:30am. No it was not a thunderclap, not a transformer exploding, not a gunshot, and not the latest North Korean missile launch.

Sadly, I attempted to start my KZ and the rare combination of a bit of stray fuel in the exaust pipe, an open exaust valve, and the lightning spark from a Dyna 2000 converged in the same place at the same time. This triumvirate combined thier forces into the highest form of holy ignition on this fair Sunday morning. Kaboooooooooommmmmm! Holy backfire Batman!

I tender my apology in the hope that nobody will report me to the neighborhood nazis and I will not receive the dreaded nastygram. Honestly I'm surprised that Precinct 4 didn't roll on this one. Maybe they did, but couldn't triangulate my location since I only fired off one thunderous blast. Ears ringing, I retreated to my bedroom to change my shorts and asses the remains of my eyebrows.

So here is the backstory to this one. I don't ever winterize my bike since the winters here are so mild that I usually do ride some during winter. Actually with the proper gear you can ride year round here.

However, I moved into this house a year ago and started my new job just after. The new job requires quite a bit of travel and now I have actually not ridden my bike all winter.

I had wanted to go for a ride yesterday afternoon since the weather has been so nice. So I tried to start the bike. It immediatedly flooded. I didn't notice that I had floats stuck open until the gas started pouring out of the overflow tubes.

I shut off the petcock, and gave up for the night. It was well and truely flooded and I figured I would just let the excess fuel dissipate and try again in the morning.

Fast forward to today. One thing I have always found peculiar about that Dyna 2000 ignition is that it always seems to fire the coils just as soon as it gets power. If there is any fuel in a cylinder, it will fire it and the motor might bump over an 1/8 of a turn or so. If you get a coil firing when there is a valve open then you get a little backfire. I had totally forgotten about this, and wasn't ready for the epic backfire I got this morning.

I guess it's a good thing that I have a straight thru baffle in that 4 into 1 exhaust. If that thing could have developed any more back pressure it probably would have launched the baffle into the windshield of my Camaro parked just in front of the garage.

I would say the backfire was about as loud as a 12ga shotgun. Just loud enough that it caused very short term ear ringing. Not as loud as my old .357 magnum with a 4" barrel.

I guess it's time to pull off the smoothies and give 'em a proper cleaning. One thing I know for sure, my ignition works fine. Wound up riding my mountain bike instead.

The shot heard 'round the world?

I shouldn't be old enough to know about this but I had two mid 60's cars in high school. One of my favorite tricks was to kill the ignition going down the highway for a couple of seconds. Then when I turned the key back on I would get the most tremendous backfire. Real cool until you blew all the guts out of your mufflers or split them open at the seams. Damn locking steering columns have taken all the fun out of motoring. :P

My other favorite trick was to turn the passenger side windshield washer nozzle sideways. Then if I pulled up alongside of my buddies and they had the window down I would give 'em a blast.
