Must be something wrong with the linkage. You're not going to keep them spot on, just close together. New carb holders? How's your spark advance?

New carb holders.

I set the timing with a test light and the advancer held in the advance position. The advancer is free.

I have removed the timing plate a couple times since I timed it but I marked it's position with paint.

Also noticed oil pooled up on top of cylinder 3. Looks like my tach drive is leaking worse than I thought. Can this cause a misfire?

How much time on the engine? No on the misfire.

I'd try some new plugs.

I have new plugs and wires. What is the best way to route the wires? It seems like a bad idea to just let them lay on top of the valve cover. I have them zip tied up above the valve cover but I feel there must be a better way.

What do you suggest as my next step? I assume put a few miles on new plugs and then check them?

Good idea. Then you'l be able to see what's happening now.

That #3 plug doesn't look terrible, but the threaded outer metal shell does seem to have less black on it compared to the others, so there may be a vac leak (which I know you've already checked for).

A vacuum leak should will not have any effect at higher throttle positions and RPMs. The sound youa re hearing must be something else. Pods will give a sucking sound that can sound like a vacuum issue.

That is a question I had. I can hear this at idle, but it is very noticeable at moderate rpms under load.

I need to figure out this cyl 3 miss and backfire.
