Hey man, what kind of brew is that showing in the carbs photo? Looks kind of thin. :huh: That glass is sort of feminine looking too. When working on motorcycles you are supposed to drink stout out of a tin cup, with dirty fingerprints all over the place. :evil:

Looks like you have all the right gear for a carb job, but is that brew a weiss bier? Probably the right tool even though I would probably not be my choice for that kind of job.
But make sure not to mix the parts between the carbs . . . . . .

Lol, have a fine mixture of beers usually, that one was a Belgium Wit. You also don't see the bottle of Bourbon sitting on the shelf next to the workbench. If the Harley guys come over I have to switch to PBR or some other " Merican" beer.

The Ultrasonic cleaner was probably around $65 after the 20% coupon. i ran 1 bath of 1:4 pine sol and water mix and then about a 1:4 distilled vinegar and water mix, I could have gone stronger probably. Get that liquid hot too with the built in heater on the ultrasonic cleaner.

Just stopped into HF and picked up the 6 inch buffer they sell for my cases ....... that ultrasonic cleaner is next ........ play roulette about a mile from the place and got lucky and picked it up for free ....... hopefully the cleaner next time I get a few bucks free to get me in there. :laugh:

The pine sol and vinegar mix has me a little worried about discoloring the carbs but sounds like you had no problem ...... a few others havn't had a problem but a few did ....... maybe the length of time might have something to do with it too.

I take it its deep enough to get the carbs completly submerged? Was gonna open it to half way measure it but didn't.

How did the ultrasonic cleaner do on removing the OEM black finish from the carbs? I cleaned my '83 carbs and got most of the paint off but there is still quite a bit left in all the nooks of the carb body. I was thinking of using aircraft paint stripper on an old toothbrush but don't want to ruin the throttle shaft's rubber seals.

For whatever it's worth, I successfully soda blasted the BS34's from my '83 GPz to remove the remaining paint. I just used my venturi-type sandblaster rig and substituted baking soda in place of sand. The soda is cheap enough that it's not worth recycling as in a blast cabinet, and after a decent rain or snow it's gone from the driveway.

No discoloration, brass jets look great after the vinegar and water mix, the vinegar helped get some of the white oxidation off the carb bodies. The 2.5 liter was the perfect size to submerge. Obviously you want to rinse and maybe even neutralize the acid with some baking soda immediately after removal.

This is the second cleaning, the first I just dumped the assembly in a tub of pine sol mix sans jets and diaphragm. Didn't work too well, but that loosened up a lot of the paint. After the ultrasonic bath it cleaned up a lot of the left over paint flakes, still not completely stripped though. From now on I'm stripping carbs completely instead of half assing a rebuild job.

Diaphragms are probably due for replacing , 1 had a pinhole. Thinking about trying JBM industries for replacements.

Adjusted floats and got everything buttoned back up. Thought I had revs hanging again but no air leaks from my tests, turns out it may have just been my idle set high. Took her for a test run and she ran great, started right up and crisp throttle response. The 115 main jet seems a good setup for my exhaust system so far. Fingers crossed.
