Just picked up a '84 GPZ 1100 this past week. Next two weeks start a complete tear down. Winter project underway.

Itinerary:
Tear down in the next two weeks.
Sell off what I don't want.
Motor rebuild, 1170 kit and top end assessment.
Modern swingarm, front end and rims. Need to research what best affordable options are.
Mikuni RS Flatslides.36mm
Salvage the headers or not. New exhaust can.
Frame, engine, and misc. parts powdercoated.
Custom paint job.

Let the fun begin!!!!!!

Not a bad first day tear down. The one picture of the carb is hilarious. Unless the needle is jammed up in the valve, there's no needle? HAHAH. Nice previous owner. Happy to see the headers are not dinged up. They'll just need to be media blasted and painted.

Up for sale:

Next step, engine removal.

Round 2 of tear down:

Some funky things thanks to the PO:

1 valve cover bolt was just sitting in there because of stripped head thread. Will need to heli coil that. The case vent filter was just sitting in the hole. No clamp or clip. Hilarious. Upon taking the case vent cover off, I notice the port has cracks at the base. I hope I can have someone weld a bead around that. Some of the cam arches didn't have the little pin dowels. That just didn't seem right. Don't know if they're all suppose to have one or not. Gotta research that in the manual.

Not too many other bizarre things so far. I'm loving how I don't have to pull the motor to get the top off. Working on this is far easier than my CB985F.

Couple of issues. Finding some cracks. In the top of the case where the vent is. There's some stress cracks where the cap bolts into the case. I hope that can me welded. Also some pics below show a messed up magneto.

Is this even the correct rotor flywheel that suppose to be on this bike? Also is there another model that is compatible? From a quick search, looks like the GPZ1100 ones are hard to come by.

Also found a really awesome patch job with a bunch of goo around the hole where the larger starter gear slides in.

I need some suggestions. Should I remove all that goo and try to have some one weld and machine that? Is that even possible?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationYes there are a number of ways that could be repaired.

you may be better off finding another set of cases. it would probably be cheaper than repairing the old ones, and it it may be more reliable in the long run.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

Just to add a few more words, I believe what everyone would like to see is the cylinder head combustion chamber in the area around the valve seats. I believe the GPZ had a superior combustion chamber, with a bathtub cutout, while the J model head had the traditional hemi chamber. Since the head it not black, I think Nebr_Rex is concerned that it may not be a GPZ head.
