1976 KZ900 with Motogpworks pipe
21 Jun 2012 03:47 - 21 Jun 2012 04:17
I've been posting pics on the
aluminum swingarm doesn't quite fit
thread and figure it's time to start a new thread.
The bike has been sitting around my house for nearly a year and I finally had time to work on it. The frame has been repainted in stages (i.e. I didn't strip the bike to paint the frame) and also the motor has been repainted black.
Forks were changed, lowers powdercoated, newer chrome fender, braided lines, undrilled disc brakes, new headlight shell, new headlight brackets, new covers for the bottoms of the speedo and tach. I had a broomstick drag bar on it but today changed to superbike bars. The broomstick had me hunched over more than I wanted to be.
The motor is supposedly 1105cc with hot cams. The trans has been undercut and it shifts smoother than any other KZ900/1000 I've ridden.
Smoothbore carbs. The bike does not idle well and I'm guessing it's because of the carbs. I took them apart, cleaned them, rejetted and it idles at around 1,500 rpm. Less than that and the motor dies. I think I'm going to put some 26's on and see how it runs.
The aluminum swingarm just went on last week. Rear wheel is a WM5 with 130/90 x 18 tire.
Today I put the Motogpworks pipe on. I like the look! Wish there was a little more baffling in there, it's kind of loud. The old pipe is a rusty Vance and Hines.
The seat is off an LTD, cut down and reupholstered.

The bike looks better in the pictures than it does in real life. Only the sidecovers have been painted. The tank has dents and rust, it will be painted along with the tail section sometime in the future...
The pipe was $550 including postage to Hawaii. I think that price is a deal! So nice to have a stainless steel pipe, no sanding off rust and repainting. I only wish it had more of a baffle to quiet the music down. Chris at Motogpworks was up front and told me the pipe only had a race baffle in it.
Here's some more pics:

Motogpworks website:
motogpwerks.com/
The guy's name is Chris. Most of his pipes have a can on the end and they cost about $50 more.
If you want a pipe like mine, tell him you want the Yoshi style like he sold to Mike in Hawaii. I'm not sure if he has anymore but maybe he'll whip up a batch.
