I am looking to return my '82 KZ1000p to functioning condition. It has been sitting for 2 years. I was just looking for a bit of input as to where to start on it. I am going to order a replacement clutch cable to fix the broken one, drain the probably bad gas from the tank, and I have a new battery ready to go.

Is there anything else I should make a priority? Clean the carbs?

Also, what speedometers have folks been using? All the cop stuff is gone from this bike and I would at least like to throw a speedometer on it.

Any help is appreciated.

If it has been sitting 2 years I would clean the fuel system from tank to carbs and an oil change can never hurt. Plus check brake fluids and visually inspect tires for dryrot

Ok yeah i'll be checking for rust in the tank too i guess. Hopefully two years wasn't enough time for rust. I just ordered a Clymer repair manual. Is the Clymer manual a good one or do I need a service manual?

Rust is not the only concern, when gas evaporates it turns to a thick varnish that will block all the small passages in the carbs

My 1981 Cop bike sat in a private collection for 17 years. It now runs like it's just broken in. After almost thirty years. In addition to the stuff discussed above, it's probably a good idea to change your Swingarm bearings, your wheel bearings, and your hub bearings. new brake fluid and pads are inexpensive and easy to change also. I had all this stuff done at a local dealer and also switched to a 530 X Ring chain with new sprockets. 17 tooth in the front and 35 in the back. Some new Metzler 88's and 880's and we are cruisin' :woohoo: Oh yeah new paint to take some of the Cop off of it, was not necessary but I'm glad I did it. B)
1981 KZ1000 Police Special coverted for civilian use with passenger seat, custom luggage rack, and paint. Daily rider.

Squirt either PB Blaster or Kroil in the sparkplug holes, re-install the plugs,let it sit for a week, and then remove a CD sized cover on the right side of the engine(as you sit in the seat).

Use a 17mm wrench on the false "nut" to turn the engine over with the plugs removed. If you try to use the 12 or 13mm bolt and the engine has seized, the bolt may break off inside the crankshaft. Turn the engine "Foward"(that is to the right.

One member here some time ago(last year?) broke off the bolt and had a *X*%&$#@ time getting the broken piece out of the crank.

The police models do not have their own FSM, just a slim booklet with some model-specific information that is meant as an addendum to the KZ1000/KZ1100 factory service manual. When I put my bike together, I used the latter. It is much, much better than the Clymer, or any other manual for that matter: exact, step-by-step instructions with lots of pictures. Even I was able to _not_ screw it up. Using the Clymer I would have made at the very least one costly mistake. I have lots of manuals, but the FSM is the only one you really _need_ to have.
The only important information in the Police booklet is the wiring diagram. But that is just as far as I can remember, because I just searched for it but couldn' find it, while I have my FSM's all within easy reach. Which says a lot.

PS:
- If you still have the original run-flats on it, junk them and put on a set of Bridgestone BT45's. A night-and-day difference.
- After two years, you should change the brake fluid, check your brake hoses for cracks and ideally dismantle and clean your calipers.

Okay I have ditched my list and am using this thread instead. hehe.

I got the 1000/1100 service manual. Looking to get started this weekend.

Thanks for the tip on tires. These are relatively new replacements.

Progress is slow going as I am limited in time. Did get the clutch cable put in and knocked the dirt off 'er. Oh and took some pics. Overall she is pretty clean and I am getting energized for next weekend. Hope to dig into the carbs.
