This is my brothers Z1A, has been in a shed on a mates farm for 20 years.
With the AU dollar high and reco parts available at cheap prices, it's time
First thing we did was spray her with insect and spider poison, next is to do a list of what is needed to give her a new lease of life, what to recondition and what to replace with new

1.New brake lines.

2.New brake fluid.

3.New tires.

4.Clean inside of fuel tank, possibly using a sealer afterwards(sometimes car radiator shops can boil out gas tanks).

5.Remove carbs as an assembly and throughly clean them.

6.Replace control cables(clutch, and throttle).

7.Replace drive chain and sprockets.

8.Replace front fork springs.

9.Replace rear shocks.

10.If the bike has ignition points, upgrade to a Dyna "S" if possible

11.Replace the igniton coils.

12.Replace the sparkplug wires(high tension leads).

13.Replace the battery.

Just a few things I can think of..................

It is not uncommon for these bikes to fire up with a carb and tank cleaning and an oil change after sitting 20 years.

It would help to know why it was parked to begin with but you have to start somewhere so I would get fresh gas to clean carbs and see what happens.

Mine sat for 13 years outside and was in bad shape, rusted fork tubes too, could not even roll it, had to cut the chain with a sawsall. It took me 9 months and countless hours and countless dollars to get back on the road but I prevailed. Mine was complete with not a bolt missing so I was able to clean and salvage alot untill I could replace parts. I still have some rusty bolts that I havent replaced yet but that does not compromise safety but is ugly at least. It will be costly no matter what but that is a Z1 so if it were me I would go for it and revive a piece of Kawasaki history

That is definitly rust on the tubes, wheels and tinware. I think they will have to be replaced

It was stored through lack of interest, I would say, In a little town called Yenda NSW Australia, If you have ever had a wine called Yellow Tail, its made in Yenda

here's another pick

Thanks for the tips

Lots of $$$$$ to get it back to ridable condition. All the chrome is probably shot but the aluminum will polish to a mirror shine. All rubber and cables will need to be replaced I did one section at a time

$$$ is really dependent on how much you are able to do yourself. Some things you probably just can't do yourself, like getting the forks re-hard chromed.

The first thing you should do is decide if you want to do a concours type restoration, or make it a bash around commuter or somewhere in between. If going for the high-end resto, you'll want to use as much original stuff as possible. Otherwise, you can go with parts from most Z years with out too much problem.

My 76 A4 was in almost the same condition as yours. My fork tubes were OK. If you want to get it ridable until you can do some more resto, start with stuff you can do your self. Put it on the centre stand. Use a jack to lift the front wheel. Remove every thing you can and wire wheel the rust off. Even if the chrome is pitted, use it until you can find better. Go thru the carbs and ignition. Probably need new carb boots and holders. Rebuild break calliper, new lines. New chain, tires, battery, cables.

Great score!! Well worth the effort.
