I am starting a new thread on my 79 1000 LTD rebuild because it takes a long time to load the old one and I don’t even like waiting for it.

Its been a while but I have not been idle, in fact I have been working non stop.. you would think I would be further along but the totally new wiring really kicked my ass for time.

Besides making a harness from scratch I ended up redesigning it too. I took all the major power off the ignition switch and put it on heavy relays , changed out the original glass fuses to the newer plugins ATC/ATO type it now has 7fuesd circuits instead of 3. The main fuse is a circuit breaker type that will reset automatically. I also added extra for future stuff like GPS, headed grips, filter and feed for an Autocom system and changed all the lights to LED’s. I then had something that was so different than the original that I redrew the electrical diagram.

Naturally we put on the mandatory Dyna set up.

Then because I have sooo much free time on my hands, I decided to try my own zinc plating of hardware and parts. Perfectly doable, but time consuming. I have a thread started in the bodywork forum on that one.

It is beginning to kinda look like a bike, I did almost wet myself when I first put on the wheels, you get a sense of the there is light at the end of the tunnel. Which is a really good thing because It will be serious riding time here in another 3-4 weeks. And I don’t want to still be on the jack.

I was about the slap on the fenders and tried to clean them up, they had decant chrome but had the little tiny pits that really did not come off and look good. I got a wild hair and had them blasted and power coated with gloss a black. I am now looking for a pin strip guy to strip them in with the tank and covers.

I also decided as I was plating that most of the chassis fasteners would look better with a black chromate finish instead of bright shiny. So that’s how most of the fasteners got finish except for the stainless socket cap screws that I used at every opportunity. Only the really custom bolts got reused.

also did the 530 chain conversion while I was at it.

Now that the plating is about done, I should be able to make some serious time on remaining chassis and misc motor parts. I should get the carbs and all the cables on and adjusted this week. Hopefully anyway as long as real life and that pesky job I have to go to every day doesn't get in the way.
