Hi!

I learned that my bike is actually red. It's black, but after sanding I can see red underneath, and this is what PO said so it does make sense.
This guy painted exact same year exact same bike. So, I know I can get stickers here:
www.diablocycle.com/KZ650-and-Z650-B2-19...plete-Decal-Set.html

Paint - not sure where to get and what is the code. From video it looks like "SMS75 SELECT ORANGE" or something like this. But not sure.

Also, what is the reason to paint silver, then red, and then decals and clear? You cover silver with red, so?

I don’t have the 1978 paint chart, but the 1977 paint chart shows the 1977 KZ650-B1 color as “Candy Super Red.” It had a first basecoat of “Special Silver Basecoat”, a second color coat of “Super Red Candy”, and a third coat of “Clear.”

I think the 1978 KZ650 red paint color was called “Luminous Burnt Red.” I don’t know how different it is from the 1977 color, but I do not believe it is an exact match. I believe the 1978 color had more an orange look to it than did the 1977 color. Ed

Ed,

What is the point of having silver basecoat? Wouldn't "red" coat just cover it?

No. The red is somewhat transparent.

Exactly! For example, the 1977 KZ650-C1 like mine painted Metallic Regal Blue used 4 different coats of paint (Special Silver Basecoat; Flake Silver Basecoat; Brigade Blue; and Clear Topcoat) to achieve the final finish. That’s quite a bit of paint. Ed

The paint on my XT250H is the same: silver base + red topcoat (thin layer) + decals + clear.

Yamaha calls it Brilliant Red. I looked for it in a single rattle can for a while, then read some more about it and realized that wasn't an option. :)

There is a seller on ebay who has the silver base coat, the red, and the clear, but I decided the tank looks okay as she is. I should ask if I can buy a small amount of the red for touchup.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationRed EB paint but probably not correct for the 650-B2: includes the the silver base coat & color. clear urethane not included.
Paintworkz is another place to try.

Nope , it's not correct. I will see if I can get paint details from YouTube author (he had his color-matched).
Also, hope to get paint cheaper than this eBay price. I think local prices is like $95/qt for mixed paint. I have clear. Just need to get silver and orange/red

They are no codes to get paint mixed from for Kawasaki. I have never looked at that color or did a match for it. Lubri-tech charts do not list a candy orange for the 78 650.
I have 78 KZ650 D part that is just a silver base and a candy red top coat. You can figure out the colors by wet sanding through the layers to figure out the base and candy.

Just for info, the 1977 red and 1978 red are not even remotely similar. I believe the 1977 color, which is actually red, was same as the 1976 KZ900LTD. They all faded to white if out in the sun whithin a couple years. The 1978 red was better descibed as orange and aged much better. I'm not a painter, but the basecoat color effects the outcome the color results in, at least the way Kawasaki painted.
I was able to buy paint directly through Kawasaki a long time age, nearly 40 years, but without doing it exactly with basecoat ect, match was nowhere close. I don't ever repaint, but added a small touring fairing and thought it could he matched. Big failure even with factory paint at least back in 1983.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Here's an example of a 1979 (not the same year, I know) KZ650 red tail piece. Quite faded, and we don't even know how many years it actually was in use. Believe it or not, I've seen much worse. Ed
