What year model?

Just purchased a KZ1000 Standard. The title says 1982 and the build date on the bike is 8/81. The color is luminous ruby red which is a 1981 color. This is the original color on the bike. The 1982 J2 was not offered in red. The Vin looks to be that of a J2 model. So why would a 1982 have a 1981 color? Could this be left over body parts and a carry over 81' color used on a J2 model? Was this common or done? Thanks for any help!

Sorry, I can't answer your questions. BUt I do like your bike.

Very nice motorcycle. To my knowledge, which is not all that great on the 1000J, 1982 would be black or silver color originally. As you've correctly figured you have 1981 bodywork on your motorcycle. Either it was a very late production 1981 model that somehow got titled as a 1982 or the bodywork was swapped with a 1981 model. I wouldn't doubt a scenario could happen where I walk into a dealership in late 1981 wanting the newest KZ1000J but find I don't like silver or black, but there sits a new 1981 in that beautiful red. I tell the salesman "I'd buy that 1982 right now if only it was red". Voila, bodywork on 1982 is now red, bodywork on 1981 is now black or silver.

Mafd,you have a very nice bike.I'm not sure at what month a bike is titled to the next year,i've seen cases like your before.Someone on here will chime in and let you know the facts.
