I don't have a kz400 but on my 77 KZ1000 I had a lot of problems with squeeling brakes. I tried different type pads and anti squeel goo from the auto parts store with no success. I then made my own anti squeel shims which I cut from some old car shims I had and it didn't work for very long either. The only thing that worked for me is getting the original kawasaki pads. I finally found some and it seems to be working so far with only an occasional slight squeel when its humid. The bad thing is they cost $100 a set and I have dual discs in front:pinch: I guess the material they use in most aftermarket brakes just doesn't work right on some of the old KZ's. Here is a pic of the shim I made. It only worked for a few hundred miles and then started squeeling again. Good luck.

I can't answer your question on making your own, but will add another to it, if you don't mind. Do they come with a new set of pads like they do for a car?
