grab bar for kz1000 luggage rack was created by sakiguy
Bought a luggage rack recently on ebay and found that I need some kind of a grab bar in order for it to mount. The ebay guy told me the U bolt mounts are suppose to mount to the grab bar. Problem is, where in the heck do I get a 1979 ltd grab bar!? The guy said it should be compatible with my bike though. Let me know if you guys think it will mount with the grab bar, because if not, I'm going to return it. And if anyone here has a Kz1000 79 ltd grab bar they don't need, I'll buy it from yah as well.

hmmmm,, i thought you had to remove the rear grab bar to install a luggage rack.. look on the rack just forward of the blinks where you took the pic and see if there are 2 bolt holes there. those should bolt where the grab bar goes.. in any case i do see the rear brabs in ebay pretty often but do make sure its for the ltd,, because of the seat they are a bit taller. i would post a pic if my 79 ltd but i havent yet figured that part out

Does anyone have a rack like this that uses U bolts to mount to the luggage rack? It seems odd that the grab bar and luggage rack would mount to the shock mounts.

Turns out there's an LTD grab bar on ebay right now. Starting bid is $100. But the LTD grab bars are kind of rare, and it'll probably be pricey.
The bar should bolt up at the top of the shock, and under the tail piece, just foward of the bliker.
Here's a pic:

Yah, can you post a close up pic of your grab bar and where it mounts. It's quite easy to post a pic. What I do is I store my pics on yahoo geocities - it's free and easy to use their file manager for uploading pics. Then when actually posting your pic in the forum, just press the Img* button, paste the link of your pic, then press the Img* button one last time. It should look something like this:

I left out the initial bracket so that the picture wouldn't get posted, and you can get an idea of what it should look like.

Lol, never mind hydro, thanks ltd rider for that pic. Yah, not going to blow $100 for a grab bar obviously. Just gonna have to be patient it seems and do some searching. I'm going to try and find a junk ltd grab bar off a parts bike or salvage yard and probably strip it the best I can and paint it semi-gloss black. That's my grab bar spending limit unfortunately

ltdrider, how those bridgestone tires working out for you? I need a new set, and was wondering what model tires you have and where you bought them. I got some worn out Metzler tires on mine at the moment. Always nice to see pics of your ride as well.

I think the Spitfires are a pretty good all-around tire. They wear well, and stick to the road pretty good.
I don't do much hard cornering, my ride is usually 80mph on the freeways. For that, the Bridgestones work well for me.
The tires in the pic are actually black letter... I colored in the letters with paint, because I was thinking about new tires, and I wanted to see what the RWLs would look like.
Well, I got a flat in my rear tire last fall, and needed a new tire FAST. The tire shop had Spitfires, but no RWLs, so I'm riding on black letters for the next year or two.

Didn't see that $25 grab rail hydro, but I did find one for $30 + $7 ship on ebay. Not too bad. It even specified the grab bar for a Kawasaki KZ1000B LTD '77-'80 It's not in pristine conditon like the one going for $100, but descent. I suppose I might look into how much it would cost to rechrome when I recieve it as well, but I'll probably have the grab bar and luggage rack mounted only for long trips to southern cali any how. I'll post some pics of my sissy luggage rack when fully installed.
