Front Brake Disc KZ 1000 A2 1978 was created by Zinamia
Hi,

I need some information about how many front brake disk a KZ 1000 A2 1978 had. For the Europe-market there are 2 discs. You will find in the part-catalog of the Z 1000 A1 and A2 from 1977/Side 42 the amount of 2. When I reading in the net I find the following informations.

The 1977 KZ1000B LTD models, and all 1978 and later 1000 models used these single-piston front calipers, whether the bike had single or double disc front brakes. The main difference between these and the ones above was the switch to the rubber line extending to the caliper with a banjo fitting at the end. We refer to these as "Late KZ front calipers".

I have an Kz1000A2 and it came with one disk, but I believe a Kz1000A2A came with two disks along with the Kz1000B model.

I believe it.., but it makes the problems not smaller :(
To change of a double disc system, I have also no idea witsch Piston are in the master cylinder. When I take the part-list Z1000-A2 from 1977, the list shows me a double disc, so when I use the Zedder cross-reference I come of the 19 mm piston. But I have received the information, that the 750 Twin B3 has also a one disc system and the smaller 16 mm piston. With this part-no of the 750 Twin, I have received the following cross-referenz.
Part # = 43020-1026
Part Description = BRAKE PISTON,COMPLETE
Model Count = 25
......
KZ750-B4 79 750 750 LTD TWIN LTD STREET
KZ1000-A2 78 1000 KZ1000 STREET
KZ1000-A2A 78 1000 KZ1000 STREET
.....

Do you have a part-catalog for the KZ 1000 A2 with a one disc system and a part-no of the piston

 with 2 kids, I makes me a little bit nerves:sick:

the 78 a2 had single disc brake on front on american model anyway.it has the odd ball shaped mastercylinder with a 1/2" piston just like the round mastercylinder.the 79-80 had the odd shaped mastercylinder like the 78 a2 but has a 5/8" bore to go with the dual discs .ive used the 1/2"mastercylinder with dual discs with no problem, but i dont think a rebuild kit is available for the 1/2" mastrcylinder though;)

The KZ 1000 A2 has a foursquare /rhombus Mastercylinder. I find the following information in the net:
Front master cylinders for the 1978 thru 1980 1000 models...
These "trapezoid" master cylinders were used on both single disc and dual disc 1000 models from 1978 thru 1980.....In the Kawasaki OEM parts system, they also supersede the round chamber cylinders used on the 1976 & 1977 KZ900B & KZ1000B (LTD) models.........

With the size of the piston I have some problems (confused).
In Germany, they speak about the two sizes:
5/8" = 16 mm (one disc system)
3/4" = 19 mm

By Klasmo ( www.klasmo-bikes.de ) a big Kawa-Dealer in Germany, I find for the Brake Z 1000 A2 the following size for the piston:
??" = 14 mm.

For EU Modells they sell Brake-Caliper with 38 mm piston and for the US-Modells 42 mm.

A lot of "MM", It is a dschungel. Tell me Tarzan

Zinamia,
What do you want to do? Do you want to put 2 discs on your bike, or just rebuild the master cyclinder?

Can you take the piston out of the master cylinder and measure the diameter and bore?

You posted a link to Redline Cycles.
Redline Cycles is the place to buy a master cylinder kit if you have the bastard trapezoid master. Damn mother Kaw for this. The companies that make rebuild kits never got around to making a kit for the trapezoid shaped master. You can try the dealer for parts, or get them at Redline. Redline put together a kit for those trapezoid cylinders, try this link, it's the kit at the bottom of the page.

www.redlinecycle.com/Brk%20-%20Fnt%20Mas...its%20-%20Seals.html

This kit will fit the '78 650 B2's too.

The '78 KZA2 1/2 inch bore trapezoidal front master cylinder piston part number is 43020-1002.
This number did not appear on the dealer's microfish. Part number 43020-1023 on the microfish is for the larger piston in 5/8 bore size used for dual discs and will not fit the '78 KZA2 1/2 inch bore.

Kudos and credit to Jeff at Z1E for providing the 1/2 inch bore part number -- don't know how he manages to keep coming up with that sort of obscure arcane information, but sure glad he does. :P

Hi Kent,
yes, I want to put 2 disc on my bike, because here in the black forest with a lot of sharp turns, up and downhill, the one disc solution iss to soft for me. I am not a hell-driver, but a little bit driving with fun must be.
I go with this question in our Z-Forum and some guys give a statements to the piston-size. The original piston for the one disc will not fit very good with the two disc. At the other side I have the decision to put a second disc with 7 mm or 2 new (punsched) disc with 5 mm and a better handling. So it will be necessary to buy also the "bigger" master cylinder. To all, I will take steelflex-brake-line. With the zedder-list I was first on a wrong trip with the part-No. (see Patton).

The '78 KZA2 1/2 inch bore trapezoidal front master cylinder piston part number is 43020-1002.

Hi Patton,
thanks for the part-number, Withe zedder I have received the following informations:

I looks not so bad in this moment. I am only a little bit irritated about the size of an other piston-size of 14 mm = 9/16" which will be sold by an german dealer. I will keep it in my eyes and will measure the piston, when I beginn to "change" the disc and the system will be empty.

The brake-caliper piston, were also with different size, but not discussed today

If I were putting two discs on my bike I would use a larger master cylinder made for two discs, I think (5/8") 16mm or larger. Check ebay for extra calipers, hose union and larger master cylinder. Many times a whole dual disc setup can be found. Good luck.

Yes, I think it is a good mixture and all are best friends, partly since "sand-box". 5 other friends of our friend-group must convinced to buy a "Z" too, we are working hard on it ;)

For the brake/disc-discussion I have received the following information for crossreferenz.
From Susuki GS 750/850/1000 are partly (first Production) the same.
