1974 900 Z1 modified to look like a LTD , some engine mods. But I still have all the original parts.
1977 1000 project bike
1972 H1 project bike
If pro is opposite of con, then what is the opposite of progress?

I remember an old posting also, something about you have to pry the aluminum/steel (I don't know) ring off that holds the face cover to the body. It's not that bad it said, but getting it back on and flattening out all of those pry marks seems like it would be a pain.

it's very easy to cut a gauge open with a dremel and close it with a bit of glue and a 3" hose clamp, like suggested here:
www.cb750cafe.com/parts.php?id=5&PHPSESS...b2b8523e8089011a564b
the trickiest part is taking off the (press-fit) needle, but it finally came off.

It is a pain to get the ring off and on in one piece, I have heard that new rings are available somewhere but have not been able to locate them. My tach ended up beeing silvertaped...

Pryed mine off years ago and crimped back on, I could have done better job but doesn't look too bad.

I've restored two differnt sets of guages for my bike and I found the best way to get the rings off is the way duncan suggested, i.e., cutting with a dremel tool. The crimping/uncrimping method works but it almost impossible to do it in such a way that the ring will not show the marks on the bottom side. The trick to getting the needles off is the two spoon pry method. In addition, I'd be very carefull not to wipe the face plate with anything as the ink from the letters/numbers can smear. Use a soft brush or compressed air. Wiredgeorges how to on this is a very helpfull. And if you run into a problem you can contact Z1 Resto and talk with Bob Harrington, he's a great guy and very helpful.

The original question was whether it is possible to get into the gauges and effect repairs. While it is very possible to get into the gauges as my old how-to post shows, I doubt you will get much repaired. If anyone has TRIED to repair anything inside a gauge they will understand this comment... I have only broken stuff bwhahaha Big Nose Bob Harrington is the only one I know who can REPAIR and RESTORE vintage Kaw gauges... You can find his website through z1enterprises.com site I think.
