I put a Dyna S ignition on my 74 Z1 along with new dyna coils and wires. I just last week was able to borrow a timing light to set the timing. The only way I can get the timing on the F mark is to completely advance the entire plate and then advance the individual pick ups as far as they will go and only then is it hittin on the F mark both statically and at idle.
Did I somehow get the wrong igniton?
Also the manual says that it should advance to where the timing mark should line up with the pin on the advancer at 3900 rpm. So there is no mark for it at "higher" rpm? Can anyone clarify?

Re: Wrong ignition and/or plate, check out Jeff's highly helpful page on this at Z1Enterprises. Had this problem on my '75, had the wrong advancer on there for the Dyna S. Your situation sounds a bit like what I experienced with this problem, at least getting marks to line up at idle.

I did check which advancer I had (the early one) before I ordered the ignition from Z1 and did put a note on my order that indicated this. Is there anyway to check the ignition to see if I have the wrong rotor or a part number?

What number is on your rotor? Not that it matters; if it says "3" you need the "3a."
Or vice versa.
I stumbled into a series of posts while sorting out my own, wrong rotor issues.

I went out and took it apart. I have a 3A rotor. So that "should" be correct for the older advancer. But...I think I may have the newer one...Here is a pic. I thought it looked more like the old one on Z1, but the space between the T and F marks looks more like the new one.....what do you guys think?

To me mine looks like the older one in the physical parts, but the markings are more spread apart like the newer one....

I think you need to get another advancer.
Look at the lugs.
Compare them to the other pictures.
I know the lugs themselves shouldn't technically matter.
But yours doesn't look like either of the pictures.
If the lugs correspond to the locator receiver on the back side of the advancer, I don't know what effect having it off a couple of degrees might make regarding your issues.
You could take a die grinder and cut another slot in the back side of the advancer to allow for repositioning it.
I had a wrong advancer on my bike for awhile. Got it off E-bay from another guy that had a 650.
But it was the wrong unit, from a used bike. So maybe you have to get another advancer.
Maybe someone with more experience with your bike will have some other ideas.

I agree with Kazoo. Your advancer is not the same as either of the photos from Z1. If the shaft is pressed in, maybe it slipped. That would explain the offset on the timing, but would not explain the seperation of the marks.
When the advancer is on the motor, and the T mark is lined up, is cylinder #1 truly at TDC? You should always verify this with any advancer. It's possible the advancer is from another KZ or another brand, like a Suzuki.

I did check to see that it was at TDC when doing my cam timing just last week and the T mark does mark TDC. I guess I should start looking for an advancer.

Does anybody know why the older advacner shows such a small distance from T to F while the newer one shows a wider range? Are they for different motors? I wasn't aware the difference was so great.
