77 kz 650 rectifier caught on fire the other night and I have had a hard time finding a replacement.

I suspect there was a short somewhere that dumped my battery through that lighter guage wire that simply overheated.

The Kawasaki dealers are closed Sunday and Monday.

The parts sites that I have been to state that they no longer have the part available, new rectifier that is.

The wrecking yard that I go to does not have one either.

Can I make another year's rectifier work? (I can identify a couple of the ones that I found at the yard from the parts sites schematics.)

Is there a good site to get the older parts?

Is there a good site for aftermarket parts?

Help !!! Any good advice, or stories of simalar experiences greatly appreciated.

Check at z1enterprises.com. If Jeff doesn't have it or can't get it, it probably isn't made.

I just replaced the one on my 77 650 C-1 after it fried a wire. Got a replacement from this guy oregonmotorcycleparts.com/index.html

Only costs $45 and comes with a lifetime guarantee his service is excellent as well I highly recommend him. Funny thing is he sent me an email telling me he has been making these for the last three years and has sold more of them in the last month or so than at any other time since he started making this model. I guess 30 years is the limit for the factory part.

I made one from radio shack parts for my 77 650 from directions that another member (electrical guru) on here made. Look up Loudhvx, he has a website with diagrams and even the exact parts you need if you want to do it yourself and save some $$$.

Yup that's it. Here's what mine ended up looking like although I could have done a better job, this worked great. I mounted it upside down under the battery box where the old one mounted to with a bolt, but I left the black cover off so heat could dissipate really easy.

Sincere appreciation everyone !!!

The story of the person who makes them in Oregon, who has made so many of them just recently, has helped me convince my wife that this is a common problem and therefore I really DONT need to get rid of the bike.

So I assume your crispiness of wires is not that bad, when I fried my rectifier and wiring I had to totally re-wire the bike because there was just too much damage to the harness. I'll probably do it again on the 650 I have now just to be sure all of the connections are clean and solid and I won't have any shorts/elec fires ever again.
