charging system was created by zippoman
I just got a 750 motor to put in my 77 650, will I be able to use my charging system on this motor? If not can adapt my harness to use the reg/rect for this? I think the engine is a 82, thanks.

Only if you can transfer the alternator from the 77 650 to the 750. They use different types of alternators which cannot use the same type of regulators.

And to transfer the alternator I think you have to use the 650 alternator cover.

Like Lou said, two entirely different types of alternators.

I really don't know if it's an easy swap or not. Hopefully someone who has done the swap can chime in. I think Mark Wing or RonKZ650 might have done the swap.

Couldn't he swap the reg/rec system? Get rid of the 77 650's two separate units and convert to using the combined unit from the 750? Then the stator and all other components of the charging system would match one another without getting into something as complex as changing the rotor on the crank.

anark650... I think your idea sounds better than swapping the alternator/stator... Whatever the swapped reg/rec looks like, the output will be a white wire going to the battery and main fuse...

That will work, keep the matching reg/rec and alternators together.
Here is why the early reg/rec won't work on the 750.

The 77 uses a different type of alternator.
Number 20 through 25 is for the B1, the alternator below that in the same pic is for the B2. I don't have the manual in front of me, but IIRC the B1 is a 77 and the B2 is a 78?

Even the B2 is different than the 750 though, single phase (two wires) for the B2 vs three phase (3 wires) for the 750.

And here is the 750.
Notice any difference?? :)

Actually posted all this because I misread the quoted post

BTW, that picture for the 650 system actually has two complete alternators (along with the starter). One is the '77 which is the upper group. It is 3-phase, excited-field. The lower one is the '78 (there may be some overlap in the years). It is single-phase, permanent-magnet. The 750 system is 3-phase, permanent-magnet.

Either system will work, but if he wants to go to the 750 system, he'll need to buy some more stuff and have to do some wiring alterations.

I would prefer the 750 system as well, but if he has all the parts for the 650 system, and they work, it may be cheaper.

I think I will try finding a reg/rec for the 750 insteed of swapping the stator. I think I got a good deal on the engine, the bike it was pulled from showed 10k and paid $150.00 for it.
