Has anyone here ever tried using automotive coils on their bikes? I found some auto coils that have the exact primary resistance as the one on my KZ305 but the primary resistance is a little low. Just wondering what harm could be done by trying this.

I'm not familiar with the 305, but don't use a coil with lower primary resistance, only higher. Many automotive ignitions use current limiters to protect the coils. KZ's do not. If the coil primary is too low, you can burn the coil or the ignition or both.

I'm sorry, I worded that worng. The primary resistance is right on the money. The secondary resistance is what is a little low.

If the primary is the same, then there's a chance it will work. The next consideration is if it was meant to be used with a current limiter.

Most car coils have a much lower primary resistance than KZ coils. KZ's are in the 2.5 ohm range, car coils go down to the 0.5 ohm range.
What car is the coil from?

Primary resistance on my orignal KZ coils and the auto coils measures 3.8 ohms. Secondary measures 11 ohms on the orignal KZ coils and 6 someting ohms on the auto coils. The auto coils I have say on them "no external resistor requrired" which i guess means u do not have to run a ballast resistor or resistor wire in the primary circuit.

Well, I looked it up on buykawasaki.com.

The KZ305 CSR is a 180 degree motor. This means it uses two single-output coils, like an old car coil. It is also points-operated, even in 1982.

So if the car coil is really 3.8 ohms, at least the points shouldn't get hurt, so it's worth a try.

I figured it is worth a try, considering you can buy these coils for about $20 each. I went to a good local auto parts store and bought solid core non-supression spark plug wire,termanal ends, and misc to build new wires for under $4. Bought new NGK resistor boots for about $4 dollars each. This seems like it is much cheaper than any other alternitaves i can come up with.

BTW OKC Kent, that is one of my old coils for sale. The other one had a broken wire which i could'nt do anything with.
