Greetings all,
it's been awhile since I posted. Lots of things going on in my life. I kind of gave up on rebuilding one of the two 1000 basket cases I bought, and concentrated on the one I bought "running." After two shops worked on the carbs, I'm $500 poorer, and it still doesn't run right, if at all. And that's not including parts prices. I guess as they say if you want something done right, you do it yourself.
if anyone with a shaftie ( if it makes a difference,) can take a photo of their vacuum lines from the carbs, or has an illustration, I would love to see it.
Spark plugs have a good ashen color, and it's running on all 4s, but it sounds/feels like it's only running on 2 cylinders. The tank was full of rust, so I cleaned and sealed it. But I did that before starting it up.

Two should go to the Clean Air valve assembly, one should go to the petcock, and one should be capped. It does not really matter which hose goes where, just make it easy on yourself.
If the Clean Air assembly is still in place, the diaphragm in the valve could be leaking, which will make for serous carb mixture wackiness on the two that are connected to the valve. If you suspect the valve diaphragm is bad, the easiest and surest solution is to remove the entire system, cap off the nipples on the reed cages, plug the hole in the air filter box and cap the vacuum ports on those two carbs.
Be sure to buy high quality vacuum caps designed for motorcycles. Many of the cheap caps at auto parts stores are not designed for the harsh conditions on a bike and will crack and leak forthwith.

Not really sure where the Clean Air Assembly is. Is it the round device under the carbs? I think a hose routes that into the airbox. Currently, it's not connected. I figured since it's blowing air out and not sucking it in, it routes engine fumes back into the airbox to be reburned. Ill take pictures of the carbs when I get home.
Thanks!

No, that's the crankcase breather and yes it vents fumes back to the airbox.
The clean air system is the takeoff on the camshaft cover, one each side, and runs pipework back to the cards.

This is not the shafty manual, but the Clean Air System is the same. See pages 254-256.

I'll definitely check those hoses as well. Thanks!
Okay, here are a few pics. I only see 3 nipples from the carbs. Two are vents, as noted, and the other is for the vacuum to the petcock. I will see if I can find an elbow to replace the one that's missing that routes are from the engine back into the airbox.
I have this 90 degree hose coming off the manifold between the engine and carbs, but I don't see where the other end connects, so I don't know if the guy that worked on the carbs just threw it on or it actually goes somewhere or should I just put a plug over the end?

In the first pic above, the hose on top of the crankcase vent is supposed to connect to the air filter box. See reference number 13 in this parts diagram.

In the second picture, what does the other end of that hose connect to?

It connects to a nipple on the manifold between the carb and head. This is a pic looking up from below it.
Those hoses in the diagram you sent look to be either 5/16 or 3/8 id hose. The two larger ones that go into the cam cover are 9/16 id. I can pick those up at the auto parts store. The long one that runs down the spine may be more difficult to find near me. Yes, they have cracked ends, so no telling if they have cracks along the hoses.

Texas I have deleted the random couple of pages of code in your last postIn the first pic above, the hose on top of the crankcase vent is supposed to connect to the air filter box. See reference number 13 in this parts diagram.

Thanks. I thought I had it deleted. I tried to copy and paste a pic instead of loading it the usual way. Lesson learned.

Lord have mercy. If the hose hanging down between the carbs and engine is not plugged, there is no way that cylinder can be firing. The mixture would be so lean, a grenade could not ignite it. Can you get a pic of where it connects to the carb holder? I don’t remember seeing one like that before.
The inside diameter of the hoses are 4 mm for the vacuum lines, 14 mm for the reed cage hoses and 19 mm for the big fresh air hose between the air filter box and the valve.

Thanks for the info on the hose sizes. I know I need to switch to metric, and I'm trying, but the old dog, new trick syndrome is kicking in.
Is this what you wanted to see? I disconnected the top hose so I could get a picture from above as well.
