Got my set new ten years ago when the 83 LTD exhaust needed replacing. The 83 was purchased to replace the rusted out original soon after I got shafted in 2000.
Even then good economical options were difficult to choose from, and the V&H was "definitely not designed for a KZ1100", so I was told. Besides that, I was sold on the chrome.
That exhaust is most-definitely worth keeping, and worth taking good care of besides.
P.S. No curb jumping!

Quite often though, I wish there was another option to quiet it down besides turning the key off.
The mirror is handy for proper alignment, and I use it quite often.

Even my Bassani pipe with a 3 inch baffle is way quieter than an open pipe. I believe my AMA sound test was only 105db's with that baffle.

When we bought Z1BEBE's '75 Z1-B in 1991, it had an obnoxiously loud Kerker 4-1 sans baffle. We replaced it with a V&H 4-1 street system. She ran that system for one Ridin' season. We found a good set of OEM 4-4's the next winter that replaced the V&H system. The V&H system has been in storage ever since. Might be fodder for this year's Mid-Ohio swap meet.

As for fitting a KZ1100, the bike frames are similar forward the engine, but the meg mount required a slight bend and 2" extension rearward to align with the support.

Z1 or kz should never have a V&H pipe
Why not ? Vance and Hines started in 1979 .
