1105cc Bore... what else - Budget was created by supercharged
With the economy not returning to the 'good ole days' (my opinion), I have decided that i will finish some projects, but limit the engine work, since if I ever sell the bike, I think engine work brings the least return anyways. If things get better, I just add items later.

My question is..
I'm planning a KZ1000 LTD build. Thought of an 1105 piston kit. Is there any way to run this with stock cams and jetted carbs?

Later I can add cams and larger carbs, which will be just top-end drop-in.

What would be the cheap way of making this an OK build?

Head-porting will give you more additional power than a big bore kit. After that, a better cam will give you the second highest kick for the buck. Not until after this will a big bore kit do you any good.

So, you are saying if you cant flow more gas, then the bigger bore won't do as much. Will it run strong? Just not as strong as it could be??

My thoughts are to bore and paint the block, so only the top end is left for later.

Note sure an amateur (me) head porting is worth much either... hence the budget comes in.

Have you priced out what everything will cost you to install a big bore kit? I think a port job would be cheaper. Also to go to a 1103/1105 kit the walls of the cylinders get VERY VERY thin and you will have overheating problems. This is what happened on my 78 Z1R. This is why most guys only go with a 1075 kit on those bikes. this is also the exact same reason I went to a 1145 on my GPZ and not a 1170 kit which was available. When the sleeves get that thin, they have a habit of cracking underneath the cylinder block and falling into the case.

Good info.

I have an 1105 in the Vetter bike. Love it, but also respect the heat and really don't put a lot of miles on it.

I came across an 1105 kit cheap, that is why I am fixated on it.

Now that I'm thinking. I have a 1075 engine with cams, ported and jetted 28s. The compression is down, as it is an old build. Maybe, I'll just put the 1105 in that... freshening that and jet accordingly. The project bike is a decent engine stock, so maybe I'll let that one ride for now, until it actually needs something.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationIs this the 1105 kit that you are referring to?

I'm curious to see if anyone has used these pistons. Sure seems like a really inexpensive option for someone needing to do a stock compression build on a budget. They get good feedback on ebay. Unfortunately, I feel that it may be a get what you pay for type scenario.

Wow Those are stock compression ART pistons. I would think that you would defeat the purpose with that. You will get more power out of higher compression than you will get from a bigger boar.

well id say its first over on a 1015 for aftermarket pistons anyway,998 has a differant pin height than a 903/1015 motor. B)

No - my 1105 is not that kit. I managed to get a Wiseco.

BUT... I did order one of those overbore kits for my CB750F and just got it today. Cast pistons, with stock compression as mentioned. I did think that it was a quick fix for low compression (rings), but to be honest I did not think it through.

Just the few comments here have me wondering.. maybe there is no cheap engine rebuild. Do it right or don't do it, as I have always been told?

When you increase the displacement of an engine without increase in breathing, you will not increase the horsepower much. What you do is lower the power band down the RPM range. That is why motors with big bore kits and nothing else, feel like they have a bunch of new power, but it is just the extra punch at lower rpm you feel.

On the other hand, if you increase breathing , porting, cams, etc, without increasing the displacemant, makes all of it's increase at higher rpm. Therefore they need to have their neck rung to feel the power increase.

Thanks, Jay.

Assuming they are carb'd and jetted right, that would keep the build cost lower, for now. The bike will be a light to light street bike at best, so the low end would be fine for me. Later the top end could be done to perfect it.

I do think I put the 1105 in a tired 1075 engine and build my other one the right way...

always a help to think it out through the threads.
