Is that carb normally for a two stroke?
Steve

Honestly, I have no idea. I've kind of been blindly following threads were people claim to have gotten it all worked out. I'm kinda bashing my head against the wall at this point. Luckily I am going to switch gears and focus on my new toy.

The new bike is an 81 kz440 but complete. I haven't got a chance to do anything with it, but it looks good.

Carb is set up with

Main 160
Pilot 30
Needle jet Q-0
Needle JN6F9

I have been beating my head against the wall with this thing lol. I have not checked for any air leaks that is next on the list as I run out of ideas. The new bike looks like it will be much less work so hopefully I will get a little bit of a brain break while I get her going.

I'm pretty sure the new bike is going to be stupid simple. It looks clean and has a complete airbox! The po said it was having trouble shifting gears....someone put the shift lever on wrong and it was hitting the stator cover and getting caught. Lol

If all else fails, I'll be able to make one good bike from the two.

After checking the timing mechanism on my other 440, I figured I would check this one's too.

It was completely seized, up I'm guessing whis is why the big would straight up die at certain rev ranges

I have a stock exhaust, the headers look great, but the mufflers are rusted out and have sever holes.

I was thinking about cutting them off and adding some slip ons. Has anyone had any luck with that?

Hobbes lives again! The carb boots on my other 440 were destroyed so I was kind of dead in the water as I don't have cash to be throwing at toys right now. Then it hit me that the timing advancer or spark thing was completely locked up when I was trying to get the single carb to run right. I had the girlfriend come over and help me do yet another engine swap. I also had her cut me out some new gaskets for the single carb manifold. Today I got most of it together and was shocked when it fired up! No more carb backfire or anything. Hopefully I will get it out and do a road test tonight!

I was having issues with the throttle cable sticking, so I decided to run it through the backbone. It is much smoother and cleaned up the look.

The mikuni carb is doing great. I have put a couple hundred miles on it so far and am getting about 45mpg. I have reached red line in all 6 gears just to see how it performs. I'm really impressed at how smooth it runs compared to my stock 440.

Nice work. The throttle cable trick is pretty slick.

The bike has been treating me pretty good. I need to pick up some new plugs and tune the carb a bit better. So far I have used GPS and topped out at about 88mph. The shop manual specs say top speed is 107. I know the bike is 34 years old, and no longer stock but what should I check out to get a little bit more power, if possible?

The exhaust is pretty free flowing, would that be hindering performance? I hate how loud they are and am looking for something a bit more restricted.

I would suspect that single carb is not helping your top end speed. Dual carbs on a twin provide the extra oomph needed. That's why the 500cc BSA racing engines (Cyclone) had dual carbs while the tame street version 500cc engines had single carbs. Ed
