You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family!
You can't change the past, but you can have the bike you want out of this.
There are plenty of us who have bought a project bike, got it home, had a look at it in the cold light of day and thought "What have I bought? I'll never get finished!"
The difference in your case is that you have a great bike to start from.
As has already been said, have faith and a vision of what the end result will look like. Take advantage of the vast amount of knowledge on the Kawasaki forums, get a decent workshop manual and do it one bit at a time. You WILL get there!!

Dude,
You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family!
EXACTLY my old line. I HAVE ADDED TO IT THOUGH.
"You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family. HOWEVER you sure a f**k can stay AWAY from them if it keeps your situation more peaceful."
Living it. Loving it.
I too have a kz700, looks like this:
Picked it up a while back for $200, thing weighs a TON, looks decent enough but I noticed after I bought it that the things do NOT sell for anything. Frigging demoralizing, I guess it's the economy. I refuse to spend any $$ on it as right now it's a black sink hole of greenbacks. Needs a battery etc. I love the look of the bike though! The 700s were rare because of the political heat here in the U.S. about Jap bikes hurting Harley.
