I am Canadian and while our country is bilingual (english and french) I only speak english. I wish I spoke other languages fluently including french, italian, spanish and cantonese. But I was raised to welcome new friends in their own languages if possible. My welcome was only a courtesy gesture...not a boast of any sort.
And by the way from my home I see the world. I guess it is how open-minded your are when you look at things-right?
