Hello everyone. Refurbing the front wheel on my 77' KZ650. While I have the hub apart, I'm replacing the bearing s and seals. The one seal is in the housing that has the speedometer gear. How do I get this seal out? The center tube where the axle runs through prevents me from getting any leverage on the inside of the seal. Already broke one of my curved picks trying to get it out. Also, what grease should I use to repack the gear inside the housing? Thanks for any help you can send my way!

You can run a screw into the seal, use a small pry bar to leverage the seal out

Thanks gents. Grease seal is out. I want to clean up the old grease out of the gear housing. I've picked out as much as I can. What can I use, solution wise, to get the rest out, and what grease would you recommend? Normal wheel bearing grease?

You can soak it in kerosene. Harder solidified grease will take a couple soaks, brush of loosened up stuff in between. I buy all my cleaning brushes from Harbor Freight.

I went after this seal today.  I don't know what you did with a screw.  That wasn't working for me.

I was searching amazon for all kinds of oddball pullers and eventually just went and got a cheap standard seal puller.  I didn't think it would work, but it came right out.  I just cocked it a bit sideways around the center boss.

Man it was very satisfying to clean all that old gunk and grease out of there.  I'm glad I went for it.

Same here.  I got the All-Balls-Racing wheel bearing kits because they included the seals.  If not for the seals, I probably never would have done anything to the speedo drive gearbox. doh.  It ended up being pretty darn easy.  Next time, I'm considering removing the roll pin to service the pinion properly as well.

Grease.  I use Belray waterproof grease. "salt water proof". auto/motorcycle/marine use. for wheel bearings, bushings, etc. plus it's a nice green color, perfect for Kawasakis. hee.

The more I learn about grease, the harder it gets to pick one.  Is wheel bearing grease compatible with the rubber shaft seal?  As far as I can tell, they are not generally rubber compatible.  But I don't know what the shaft seal is made from. Of course there are like 20 different common elastomers that it could be.

I have rubber compatible silicone grease (silglyde and silaramic), but they don't seem right for rotating metal parts.  I have wheel bearing grease (Castrol and mobile 1 synthetic), but wonder about the seal. And about 30 other things that are called grease.  Thoughts?

The Bel-Ray stuff is an aluminum complex grease & the tub says it "won't swell seals or o-rings."
According to Valvoline, these types of greases have the characteristic green color.
I couldn't find an msds on the product I used & the label doesn't have any composition info (Bel-Ray MC-11).

Interesting.  I can't find any mention of o-rings or seals in any of the documentation, or in photos of the tub.  Seems like they must have changed the text on the tub.
