I recently replaced the destroyed handlebar controls on my KZ400 with a very well made replica. In addition to the aesthetic improvements, I now have the PASS function added to the HORN function (wonderful), and now I also have the front light switch, which allows lights to be turned off when stationary, including the dash lights (wonderful again).

However, my bike does not have position lights, and I would like to have that option. Does anyone know what exactly are the European models to look for a European headlight? I understand that the European versions were the ones with front position lighting.

All original, but: electronic reg/rec (Oregon Motorcycle Parts), new handlebar controls (w/ PASS/HORN/lights switch, LED dash lights (superbrightleds.com), Dynatek coil (3ohm), MAC mufflers, HEL brake hoses, rubber fork boots, 4.00 rear tyre (Dunlop K70), chromed chainguard

Not sure what you are referring to as "position lights" UK would be no good to you as they dip to the left but we have
  1. Main Beam
  2. Dipped Beam
  3. Sidelight (this is normally a low wattage bulb in the headlight which comes on with the tail light and instrument lights")
American spec have three wire turn signals on the front which gives them "marker lights" in the turn signals not the headlight
What function is it that you are looking for ?

Clearly
3. Sidelight.

I've been looking but can't find any headlight that contain that added bulb with its corresponding wiring.

A "side light" or position light bulb need an extra slot/socket in the reflector of the headlight.

The below diagram shows what I believe you are looking for on a European spec KZ1000j (I am sure there will be others)

That gives me a more precise idea of what I'm looking for. However I have looked in Partzilla and can't find any KZ400 headlights that have that sidelight.
I'm going to look for models that shared a headlight with the KZ400.

I keep investigating.

All you need is a 7inch replacement headlight for an original mini also used on hundreds of other cars. You position light is known as a pilot bulb in Europe.
Only thing to look out for is if its LH or RH orientation.  They are a straight replacement fit.
I can't post a link but they all over ebay.
item/225131695241 = RH
item/134000944883 = LH

So far as I know, these were never used in the U.S., so parts sellers here will not have it.

The original headlight has tabs that the replacement doesn't, it probably won't fit properly and I'll lose directional adjustment.

I don't mind paying more money for a compatible headlight instead of a cheaper generic version, but I still don't know if there is a sidelight headlight for the KZ400 or which of these headlights from other models would be compatible.

It appears the KZ650 mounted a 7-inch headlight with sidelight, apparently compatible with the KZ400, but I'm not sure.

Trust me, it'll fit perfectly. I've used them on several restoration projects. The black 650 below has one fitted which is an American bike I imported into the UK.
