Hello everyone

i know its another post about this subject but after reading all the old posts about this and i cant find the answers to my questions

I am speaking about the 1977 kz650 version of generator with field coil system and separate regulator and rectifier

I understood rectifier is quite simple and cheap to build or find online

The regulator is the device i would like to buy cheap, modern and efficient

Is there any out there, maybe meant for other applications, available as direct substitute?

Is there any easy circuit with modern components which is easy to build to replace the mechanical designed in the 70s one?

I understood this regulator should reduce current intensity to the field coil with the raise of current voltage out of the rectifier to keep this voltage below 14.5v. Seems simple. But this is where my electronics knowledge ends.

Last question when thinking of using a modern system is. If i give a fixed in term of intensity amount of current to the field coil, can i then use a modern reg/rec combo meant for a 3phase generator without field coil?

Thanks everyone for any suggest

Cheers from italy

Vic

The field coil design is more advanced than the permanent magnet AC generator.  As you most likely know, though, parts availability is more limited.

One option you have is to convert the system to the permanent magnet type by replacing the engine cover, getting a stator, rotor(?), and a nice R/R (I recommend the SERIES type like a SH775).  In the USA, these parts are dirt cheap, but I’m not sure about in Italy.

I am not enough of an expert to tell you how to make one from scratch. They may well be some here who can. I do know there are some aftermarket locations that do sell more modern versions of regulators for this type of system. There are also some that sell combine units (regulator and rectifier units) for this type of system.

I want to keep the standard generator plus field coil setup

Just want to update the regulator which seems to be the only difficult part

I know there are at least 3 companies in the states which produce those separate or combined parts but with customs and shipping it is almost like buying a nos part

What makes me willing to find a diy solution or a widely available part if used for other applications is that i feel like this regulator with modern components and knowledge is very cheap and easy to build or to find if you know what youre looking for or if you know how to design and assemble easy circuits

This is the way that I would go, a modern combined unit that replaces the separate units. Stock regulators are either very old used parts or expensive NOS parts. Just make sure you buy a combined unit specifically designed for this style of charging system (they are available)

This company sells R/R units for bikes that use a field coil.   www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/Reg_rec_units.html

Gotta be careful; the Rick's R/R is a three-phase jobby, not the type for a field coil.

I believe this is the boy ? Although the 650 has a field coil style charging system it is still 3 phase

Humm, Type-B...  That doesn't come up when searching on their site for '77 KZ650.  It's good that they have one, though.
