Latest update … I made the extension wire so I could put the relay in my shirt pocket. As I was riding I could feel the relay dropping in and out. I MOST LIKELY have a bad connection in my original “coil power” wiring … and of course it’s intermittent  (how fun is that ???), now all I have to do is find it.

Actually I’m glad because I would hate to have to ride with that relay in my pocket all year ;)

Check the ground?

Well … in short … the problem was a bad ground. Max2022 hit it right on the nose !!!

What I had done was attached the ground for the relay to the bolt that I mounted the relay with. After all kinds of by-passing and testing, I came to the conclusion that it could only be the ground. I checked continuity from the bolt that I mounted it with to the negative terminal of the battery. The readings were floating all over the place. I found this really odd because it’s the bolt in the steel plate where the starter relay is mounted … you know, under the left side cover. I can’t believe that that assembly isn’t grounded well … but it isn’t. So I ran a new ground wire to the frame and all is well.

MSD makes a high quality relay for ~$25.00. I used the PN 8961 shown in the link below.
