I have an 82 KZ550 LTD with a set of mechanical slide TK K22P carbs. I recently installed a set of emgo pods, and the exhaust is stock, although the internal baffles have been removed (previous owner). Performance with the pods is ok, but I get a little bit of mid range hesitation and feels like there should be a little more on the top end. I know I need to rejet, but the question is what brand of jets should I get? Mikuni? Keihen? I can handle the other stuff, just need to know what I should be asking for (brand that is). Thanks!

You'll have to stay with the brand of carb you have. Aftermarket jets are even made for specific carbs.

You have Tekei carburetors. The thread is slightly different on either Keihin or Mikuni jets so you may damage the thread on the main jet holders a bit if you change to other manufacturer's jets. I know that Jeff Saunders may be working on coming up with a source for Tekei main jets so contact him at www.z1enterprises.com and see if he has some yet. I suspect you will need some Tekei #97.5 mains and to raise your jet needle by reclipping to 4th slot to fix the lack of performance the pods/4 into 1 have caused. If Jeff doesn't have the Tekei main jets, not sure if the Keihin mains suggested cross over exactly... that is, whether a Keihin #97.5 is the same as a Tekei #97.5... There is one way to find out and that is to try some.

Vielen Dank WiredGeorge. I had a feeling that finding jets for this thing was gonna be tricky, esp. with these goofy Tekei carbs. Many thanks..now the hard part lol.

I've been eyeballing the 3/64" drill bit in my toolbox for the last two days. I know the diameter of the stock 92 mains is around .030", 3/64" is around .046. I know drilling jets is verboten..but I am at my wits end..and refuse to shell out 125 bucks for a dynojet kit that may not work. What do you guys think?

edit: after perusing the net, maybe I can start with a .0330 bit (#66) and if that doesn't work, go to a 1mm bit, then maybe the 3/64" bit..

STOP the presses! DO NOT drill the jets. Jet drilling may work fine but it may also produce unintended results depending on your ability to drill straight.

I found out yesterday FOR SURE, the small headed Keihin main jets (readily available all over) have the same diameter and pitch as the old Tekei main jets. I am sending a set of #102 mains to a customer to replace the #92 stockers as he is also having the same issues with his pod/4 into 1 550 as you are having.

These Keihin jets ARE available at anyplace that sells Harley stuff... they are the jets used in the big twins... the problem is the SIZE needed. I am sending #102 because I don't have anything between #90 and #102 and I think a #102 is about right. The Harley shop will not have anything that small... you will have to have them order them. Once I get some feedback from my customer on performance with the #102 mains vs #92 stockers w/Emgo pods and 4 into 1, I will start stocking them and using them in rejets... pending the feedback of course. If they prove too small or large, then I will modify.

Believe me WG, drilling the jets was a last resort. Knowing that the Keihen jets will fit takes a lot of pressure off. Many thanks!

I lack precision measuring tools for measuring the holes in jets but the Keihin and Tekei looked roughly the same. In other words, a #92 Tekei looked about the same as a Keihin and I DO have graduated wire sets for cleaning jets and these appeared to have about the same clearance.

I was using the same thing to calculate how much I should drill if it came to that. I have another question: which one of these would I be using? www.rageperformance.com/carburetorparts.asp

I am assuming the first set of Keihin jets on the page, but for some reason they seem a little long.

Sudco has a better listing..just trying to get an idea of what I am looking for when I go to the store later today.

Are they the 99101-393 series or the 99101-116 series?
