Man am I glad I found this thread. I am almost ready to order new pods and have been considering one of the cheaper brands for the first time (I have only used K&N to this point). I don't think the trouble is worth the money you'd save. One thing I'm wondering about though, what about the no-name filters sold by Schnitz, Ape, and others like that? Are they possibly emgo brand? As cheap as they are I don't think they're K&N. Here's one example of what I mean...
kzzone.com/carbs.html

$59.95 for a set of four. Way cheaper than K&N.

one way I went around this problem on a different bike was to buy a larger diameter pod filter and mount it on the stock airbox boots. This ensures the air jets will not be obstructed and provides the smooth, straight air flow of the stock boots.

That sounds interesting, do you have a picture? You know how we love pictures around here!!:)

Now i know information i get from my old man doesnt always translate into anything useful for bikes (he races dirt track cars powered by motorcycle motors). Last time he has his motor worked on the builder told him he could gain 5 extra horse if he got rid of his K&N pods and had an air box built (he gave him a diagram and spec's for such a box). He was told to use a k&N style filter in the air box.

Now i dont know how much (if at all) that could apply to us; however Jack Serman (the guy who built the motor) is no ones fool; but the applications are so different (they dont run a transmission to save on rotating mass, the motors turn around 180-200 horse without turbos or any forced induction...)

So my question is, can a stock air box be modified top be more efficent than pods?

I,ve been down this individual air pods route several times. Even though k/n pods were used with 34 cv carbs they never worked as well as an airbox with an installed k/n filter.Pods required over rich jetting and they were always affected by crosswinds plus they are very noisy (intake draw) for street use.I have 2 air cooled kawasaki's, an 82 kz1000j that's a street/strip bike and an 82 injected gpz1100b2 street bike. Both use the air box with a k/n filter. Pods were no faster at the strip no matter what jetting was used including the stage three dynojet kits.

i talked to my daddy earlier. he said they often used individual filers inside the air box. I am guessing the box was only to prevent turbalance and other air issues from effecting the carbs. the point is IDK if an air box cvan pervide any performance gain or not, i just have a pile of questions before i spend the 140 for k/n pods!

I usually try to keep the air box when I can. I have modified the air box to fit pods on Suzuki GT 750 and Honda CB 750. I'm not sure how easy it would be to do this to other bikes (they are 2 that I have done so far). I dont know about any true dyno numbers for performance. On some bikes, the air filter is part of the bodywork and when removed it has a wide oped area where you can see the uglyness usually concealed by the air box. I like the Uni pods for this as they are about the same price as the Emgos, and alot better quality.

Airtech sells fiberglass air box blanks to help put pods inside.
