Howdy y'all.  I'm in need of a working starter that will fit an 82 KZ440.  I live in MD.

Thanks in advance.

I have one but I live in the UK but if you have the Original it can be rebuilt or alternately Kawasaki used the Same Starter on the KZ400(74/77) KZ400 (78/79) though the + Lead may by offset a little but they still can be made to fit as they are all 12v.

Ian- I have already rebuilt it but there is a short in the armature.

Nerdy- I've found a few used (untested) ones on eBay ($80-$150) and $225+ on various parts sites.

You might be able to find a shop that can fix the issue with the armature. Some old-school automotive shops can rewind armatures, replace bushings, etc.

It's my understanding that the Rick's Motorsport starters (the ~$225 items) are good quality but I have no experience with them.

You could also buy one of the used ones and hope that it has a good armature you can swap into your housing. That would be a gamble, of course, which leads us back to option 1.

Check the ads in bike magazines, too: you might find a place to ship the starter to get it repaired.

I do wish there were more old school shops that worked on Jap bikes in MD but Baltimore Cycle Salvage closed long ago.

I found 2 used ones on eBay but they are ~$125 for a tested one and $80 for an untested one. I might just bite the bullet and wait to get the Rick's later.

Thank you all for your help.  I found a possible replacement after running multiple part numbers.  I'll post up results later.
