Over the years I've accumulated alot of flat heads but still seem to never grab one that fits those jets or drain screws just right......

One of these days I'm gonna spend a little time and grind up a few..... have read a number of you guys suggesting that lately and you've talked me into it.:blush:
1978 KZ650 b-2
700cc Wiseco kit 10 to 1.
1980 KZ750 cam, ape springs, stock clutch/ Barnett springs.
Vance and Hines Header w/ comp baffle and Ape pods, Dyna S and green coils, copper wires.
29MM smooth bores W/ 17.5 pilots, 0-6s and 117.5 main
16/42 gearing X ring chain and alum rear JT sprocket.

I've often wondered if a set of driver bits for gunsmithing would be better for handling jets.

Brownells probably has something perfect, but expensive.

O have the magic kind! When I look for a jis philups they all turn flat head, When I want flat head they all turn jis philips. I hate it when that happens.

Yes, Brownell's and other precision tool sellers sell properly ground straight-blade screwdrivers. If you have a decent bench grinder, it is not hard to modify a tapered one, as long as what you need is a s slim as the narrowest part of the taper.
Once you have tackled a slightly stubborn screw with a proper tool, you will never go back.

I've got a few screwdrivers ground specifically for jet and pilot screw removal. When my Harbor Freight bench grinder died I sprung a little more and got a nice Jet 6" and count it one of my better purchases. When grinding it's critical to keep the temp down or the metal will turn soft. A cup of water near by will do the trick but if you grind too much the hard outer layer will all be removed.

For slotted screws I found the PB Swiss screwdrivers to work exceedingly well. Their tips are parallel ground and have the sharp corners removed. I have a couple that I use primarily for gunsmith tasks; mine are a little older and are of the 7100 series before they began gold plating the shafts, but I'm certain their newer series 100 models are made just as well. Ed

Look no further for a set of screwdrivers that not only fit the jets on Mikuni and Keihin perfectly but also includes #0 #1 #2 and #3 phillips that are actually JIS and fit every screw on your bike.

I have 3 of these sets spread around my rather large garage so I always have a set close.

I bought all 3 when they were on sale for about $6. I bought my first set about 10 years ago and it's still my go to set.
Don't fix it until it's broken.

Good question. They can be either Phillip or JIS, bit not both. The dimensions of the two types are different as can be seen in the diagram below. Notice the Phillips has the 19 degree point at the end. That point prevents them from seating properly in JIS screws and causes them to cam out. Ed

Thinking he means the inserts ....... I have a set from Ace of inserts #1-#3s that are ground flat like you show Ed and they fit great ...... maybe not true JIS but act like them since they are ground flat. Right Ed ?

Yes. If they do not have the points on them they should work fine. I have a set of what were originally Phillips screwdriver tips from which I ground off the points, and they fit as well as the genuine JIS tips I have. Image below shows how well my modified #3 tip fits. Ed
