The engine number is kz750ee1535 it's in my 1991 Kawasaki zephyr 750 frame but I don't think it's the original engine because I've been trying to find a starter for a 91 zephyr 750c1 and all the starter motors are similar but not the same. Can anyone help me out? It needs a new starter but all the starter motors I've found for a 91 zephyr 750 are similar but not the same. The two philips head screws for this one mount the front of the starter (splines)to the engine (which has two small gears sitting in a ring that has gear teeth) and then has the two bolts that you screw in in the left side. The splines on the starter are shot so they free spin. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a list of kz engine and frame numbers in the Filebase, but it seems to be malfunctioning at the moment. Try zedder.com

If that engine number is 001535, then it looks like it is from a 1980 model.

It says kz750ee1535 on the engine case. But I think I do remember reading somewhere that the ee is an e1. Still doesn't show right parts diagram for the starter motor though if it is.

It's not 001535  it's ee1535 is that the same? Figured out the gears are fine when I replaced the gear on the starter even though the old one wasn't worn out just to make sure... Im 99% positive it's the starter clutch. For some reason it's not actuating. It worked for a while then one day all of a sudden it would only grab every once in a while, I had to press the starter a few times and then randomly it'd catch and my bike would turn over, start and run, then a month later it started working fine again. Everytime I would hit the starter button it'd turn over and run like there was never an issue. Then after about a month or two of it working again I didn't ride it for a couple weeks, went to go start it and it would just spin the motor and not grab. If you hit the starter like ten or twenty times in a row it will catch for a split second but not even enough to make it do a full crank of the engine, just enough to hear it grab and pump the pistons just a little then it would free spin again.... Am I right that it must be the starter clutch? Anyways I posted it for sale since I have another project, building a ironhead atm. Figured i can use the money I make from selling it towards my ironhead and if I don't sell it then I'll do a complete engine rebuild on it, buy a rigid frame and make a custom rigid chopper out of it like people do with the cb750's, that is after I finish getting my ironhead going and can afford to have another project. Until either it sells or I finish my Ironhead it will sit sadly.... Random thought I've heard of these old kz 4 engines not liking synthetic oil and that it makes the clutch slip. Clutch has never slipped but I am running full synthetic 10w-40 race oil. Wonder if that'd make the starter clutch slip or not catch? I only had the bike for a couple months and only rode it maybe 100 miles after riding it maybe 40-50 miles back home before I changed the oil because it was black, and a little low because the oil drain plug hole was stripped so it was leaking, and had to replace the plug with an oversized piggyback drain plug. Then I only rode it for around another 100-130 miles before the first time I had problems and since that I've only rode it maybe another 150-180 miles. It's only been about 300 miles or so since I changed the oil, and filter. Could the synthetic be making it act like the starter clutch is acting the way it is when really it's just slipping due to using synthetic race oil? My bad for the long message that's all of the thoughts that have been in my head though so I figured I'd say them to see if itd help someone be able to help me figure it out.... 

Certainly sounds like a "starter clutch" problem, given the mechanical nature of the mechanism I would be surprised if it is being effected by the oil, it's more likely just worn out 

Synthetic oil won't hurt the starter clutch.  The clutch has springs and pawls and the springs often break, requiring a replacement kit.  You can buy the kits on ebay, but replacing them is a big issue.  It's inside the engine cases.

It's not 001535.  it's ee1535. is that the same?

From the CycleChaos wiki, the 1991 ZR750 Zephyr engine numbers begin at KZ750EE150001. 
So there should be six digits following the KZ750EE, same as a KZ750-4. I'm wondering if you're not seeing the last 2 digits.
Or maybe someone messed with it. ???   A photo of your engine number might help.
