Have done everything to my1977 KZ 1000 but it still pops at wide open throttle. Had played with the valve shims years ago and they were way off. Set at 002 to 003 in now and starts and idols great now. But crack the throttle wide open runs bad, slowly open the throttle and it runs right up great. Could the valves be to tight yet book says 002 to 004 is ok. THANKS

Valve clearances should be 004 to 006 ( 0.10mm to 0.15mm ) minimum.
Always keep to the upper limit.
002 to 004 is too tight and are the old figures which were ammended due to instances of valve burning, especially the exhaust.

I agree with shimming for more clearance.  That said, it's unlikely to be causing the issue if opening the throttle slow allows the engine to rev up.  Is the bike stock?  Stock exhaust and airbox installed?  Stock jets?

No the bike has had a bore job 30 over and 4 pods on the carb and been rejetted for that. Carbs were rebuilt 2 months ago. Every thing gone thrue but the valves were my fault  i shimmed them wrong a while ago and it ran terrible but better. now. But it must still be off. I will do that again to see if ti helps 004 to 006 as per post.  Don't know what else to do. Thanks

I always shoot for .006" minimum because they always seem to close up, they never open up! :)

Just found out what the problem was not the valves could not figure out the problem and thought the ony thing left was to try without the air cleaner pods off and ride the bike wow what a deference it was starved of air. The Kand N filters were blocking the air flow. They were necked down to 7/8 of a inch I need 1 3/4 inch air hole on each carb. Never knew the new filters were to small. Just crazy. Runs crazy fast now. Ordered new filters .Thanks for the help.

Sounds like they weren't genuine K&N's but cheap copies.

Yes I agree. I will always check the filters first.
