TOPIC:

do the four lower exhaust studs need to be removed before head can be decked?
also, are ya supposed to remove valves, seals springs, etc?
anything i need to know? thank you

Lower studs are best removed.
Valves etc can be left in.

Thanks for posting this daveo. I might give these guys my GPz head. My regular machinist has had my jugs and pistons since April!

And I thought mine was bad after 3 months when he told me he couldn't say when my stem and extensions would be done (after telling me 4 weeks when I dropped them off 

  yep I removed em and finally got'er done for a minute lol 
tested with water overnight and no leaks. excited is an understatement
 

Just my thoughts; If I were getting a head skimmed, I'd strip everything I could off before the machining - studs, valves etc. It'd most likely be as part of a more rigorous rebuild, so the head might also find itself getting media blasted at the same time. Removing studs when it's on the bench is straightforward, it lets you clean & check the threads, antiseize them, replace any iffy studs etc. Also a good time to clean the valves up, relap them in their seats, replace valve stem seals. Plus, once completely stripped, cleaning any swarf from the skimming process can be done more thoroughly.

Although to be fair with a set of scrap plugs in to protect the threads from swarf any other machining debris should be easy to blow off (might also be worth covering the cam bearing lube holes as well just to be "belt & braces")

yeah, i removed all the valves, springs, keepers, collets etc. plus the 4 lower studs. didn't want to mess with 'em because they're so easy to break causing all kinds of problems that i don't want or need. 
was super careful while installing valves and everything not to bugger up the deck work.
