I have a black (later) points cover on my Z 650 B1 for reasons unknown to me.

Question: If I find a first generation "all italic capitals"-cover, is it a straight forward switch to make?

Or is it to be expected that the reason some one switched to the black cover means that something is altered behind the cap, something that will make a re-fitting of a original cover impossible or tricky?

I'm pretty sure any 650 engine points cover can be used.  I think the other side is where you have to be careful.  However, to be safe, I would go ahead & remove the cover to take a look.  Be sure to get a gasket beforehand >> I try to buy several at a time, often times available as a "lot of x" on EB.

ps:  if you haven't had the cover off in a while, be sure to use an impact wrench to avoid damaging the screw heads.  I use a hand held tool >> choose the appropriate screwdriver tip, fit the tool to the screw, then whack it with a mallet or hammer.  you could apply a penetrant beforehand & let it sit overnight.

I agree with Martin that all of the 650 points covers will fit.  I also think some of the 4 cylinder 750 point covers will also fit.

Yes & probably including the ZR750s since they use the same gasket.  Additionally, the 550s >> some have the same engine cover as my motorcycle & a couple of the 1980 650s. The fitment on an 80 model should be the same as the B1.
