Should the VIN on the frame match the same number on the motor?

The VIN's won't match, but may be within sveral hundred of each other on the Z1 series. From 1976 (?) on there is little engine/frame congruency in VIN's.

Thanks for the feedback.Yeh, my VIN numbers match on my '77 KZ1000. I was told this was pretty rare.

Smokem:

I have two 1977 1000's and the numbers aren't even remotely close. If I had matching numbers on one, hmmm...you might have the only Z1000 with matching numbers:dry:

Smokem, I have know some (Countries) to quote the VIN as the engine number, whereas, the common Vehicle Identification Number utilises the frame number.
I think I would take the trouble to push the cables and brake lines out of the way, get a torch and inspect that frame number on the steering stem. The check is merely to ascertain the most unusual case of them being the same.

Ok you guys, here's the scoop. When I registered the bike in Arizona, the MVD Inspector verified my VIN on the frame & motor before I could register it, for obvious reasons, and get my Az Title Papers. I used a torch to "triple check" (& I blew the bike up-lol,just kidding boys) since this post & I have a matching VIN bike; KZT00A003171. Does this make the bike worth anything more?

Smokem:

I don't know where the bike came from prior to Arizona, but most states only ID the bike via the frame VIN on the title and rarely use both engine and frame as official identifiers (I am occasionally wrong:woohoo: ). For example, Texas would only use the frame number to run a VIN and register it in-state. They don't care what the engine VIN is (nor has there been a record of it kept by the state since the original sale). The number you gave is the frame VIN (motor VIN would have an 'E' after the 'A'). As an oddity, the bike is a keeper and a Japanese production model...as for value, it probably doesn't enhance it. I have a 'first day of production' frame VIN for the KZ1000A1 (= very low frame number) and it doesn't mean a thing towards value
