I am continuing to tear down the original engine for my '74 Z1. I noticed that the #4 sleeve can be moved in the block/jug. It can be pushed above the deck about .250" by hand. The other 3 are tight. These are supposed to be press fit, correct. So what kind of problem do I have here and is that sleeve or this block usable? The bores still looks good and are within tolerance so all I was planning to do was to re-ring.

Thanks

First, if you ask a question, have a bit of patience as not everyone who reads this board reads it multiple times every day and certainly doesn't look at it at night!

The sleeve should be fine once the head is installed. It ain't going anywhere. Some sleeves will easily just pull right out. If you aren't happy with the sleeve pulling out, I suspect you could keep it in place with a few well positioned dollops of JB Weld.

Thanks guys for the answers, I feel better now.

Sorry for the seeming impatience, I guess I have been spoiled by the really quick, useful responses in the past.

Thanks

903s and especiaslly KZ1000s all have loose sleeves. We encounter this problem when honing a block. The sleeves will want to spin in the block. We have as fixture we use on 1000s so we can hone them without that happening. Once the head is installed, nothing is going to move.

Funny story. This guy came to the shop to have his 1000 block fitted with a 1075 kit. It was about 90 degrees outside, and this guy had his block in the back of his pickup. He pulls up, jumps out, reaches in and picks up the block and as he lifts it over the side, all four sleeve fly out and land in the street, rolling all around making a racket. He was sorta in shock. We told him, no problem. Picked up all the sleeves, stuck them back in the block while it was still warm. The guy is riding around on his 1075 to this day.

Hey Jay, do you guys have replacement sleeves to a stock bore of 1015?

Funny about these sleeves moving around. I've often wondered, why don't we just warm the block/ barrels let them drop out and then put the in a lathe and bore them to the required specifiactions. Give them a quick hone and drop them back into the warm block.... Pressto! a re-bore. The set-up time would be reduced considerably.

I've read articles that say they must be bored in a certain sequence otherwise they will be ruined!

What say, anybody?

RegardZ.
P.S. I was told Kawasaki doesn't sell new sleeves, or sleeve/piston sets. (Now that would make things easy!)

if you try to bore the cyl in the lathe, they will be out of round by the time you get them back in, sleeves are very senstive to pressure points, ie the block.

BS, thanks for your answer. I can understand your point with regarding tight press-fit sleeves. What about the ones we are discussing... The ones that can fall out on a hot day, yet would be retained by the head. Would they be sensitive to any pressure points?

Admittably, I have seen some pretty tight sleeves, so it is not the normal case, nevertheless, the ones that can move, do work well and the fact they could move is not a disadvantage.

I used to think it was to align precisely to the crankshaft and ensure they were the correct distance apart. Yet, if they could move around after machining in the block/ barrels, this is not so?
