Did anyone do this swap? Did it work?

KLACKO, we have had scheduling issues, which we are still working on.
Snakebyte, according to the Kawasaki Service manual, this transmission is fitted in many mid-sized models. I have yet to confirm that, however.

I thought I'd stick my nose in on this subject as its a project I completed not long ago.

To sum up the gears are a straight swap. (I don't know about kickstarts on 650's sadly). Apart from the 2 gear clusters, the selector shaft and quite likely the gearbox output shaft cover is needed.

The output sprocket is also held on by a different method. On the 750 its by a large nut and tabbed washer, whilst on the 550 its by a small locking plate which bolts to the output sprocket. On my conversion Ive opted to use a circlip. So far with no problems.

On my bike the output shaft cover on the 750 had the neutral sensor in the wrong place for the 550 selectors. I simply used the 550 cover which has the same bolt pattern but leaves a very small gap at the top of the cover, which was plugged by the gasket luckly.

The thread for the clutch nut was also slightly shorter but this proved to be not a problem.
I cannot recall any other problems.

Welcome to KZr, GPZephyr... Very happy to hear [at last] from someone who has done this swap. Would you say this has made a noticable difference in the way your bike performs? Did you make any gearing changes?

What do you mean "at last"? koolaid_kid's GPz750 motor is sitting in my garage with a 550 six speed trans in it, just have to lap the valves and button it up

What I meant was that this was the first time I've seen someone who has done the swap, and actually put it on the road. Everything I've read says it should work, or that they saw some article years ago blah-blah... No offense intended, steell.

I found that first gear with the final drive on 15/39 as standard was too low for my liking. Be good for wheelies though

So I changed the 15 tooth output sprocket to a 16T item. This has made everything just perfect. First is now a bit higher than stock with the remaining gears slightly closer to each other. Sixth ended up taking nearly 1000rpm off at 100mph.

Overall the conversion is a great one to do and not particuarly hard as all I did was to take the engine out , flip it over and remove the lower crankcase. I know there is a bit more to it than that. The most difficult thing for me was to undo the clutch nut.

steell, how are you going to hold the output sprocket on?
My circlip method seems ok but am thinking of tapping the O/P sprocket and using the 550 fixing.
