As I under stand it

KZ = street model
900 = engine size approximately
A or whatever the letter = the specific model (Standard, LTD, GPz, etc)
4 or whatever the number = which year of production of that specific model

A1 would be the first year, A2 the second year and so on, so you have the fifth year of production of the 900 A.

A very nice looking one, by the way.

Nice Looking Motorcycle. It should have a drum brake on it. It was a first 1/2 yr. 1977 KZ900. Late 77 had the KZ1000 with a disc brake rear. My old brain is rusty. My 1st car tire conversion bike was a 1977 KZ900. I sold that title only in 1985
Livin in "CheektaVegas, NY
Went thru 25 of these in 40 yrs.
I SOLD OUT! THE KAW BARN IS EMPTY.

A bit confusing. If it's the fifth yr of production and it's a 77, then the first yr would be a 72-900, correct. Mine is a very early, ( if not one of the earliest left) 77-kz 1000 A1. Vin # KZT00A000283, engine # KZT00AE000295, and it has a rear disk brake. Hope this can help...?

1973 Z1 900 = 1st year
1974 Z1A 900 = 2nd year
1975 Z1B 900 = 3rd year
1976 KZ 900 A4 = 4th year
1977 KZ 900 A5 = 5th year

urankjj you have the first year 1000 thus the "A1".

The only 900 with rear disc was the unicorn 1976 KZ900 LTD, which also had the first factory dual front disc.

While we’re on the 1977 subject, I could use help identifying a frame I got in a parts lot purchase. The year is worn off the tag, the tag and frame numbers match, appears to be in the correct range to be a 1977 kz900 A5. Z1F-5143XX. But see photo of what appears to be a rear MC mount.

I checked my A5 photos, none have this bracket.
Someone added the bracket or replacement frame.

It can't be a Z1 frame with 8 98. I suspect it's Aug 75 or Aug 76 but I lean towards '76 because of the relatively high serial number.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.
