Now, that's more like it. Exhaust note is much deeper, pulls stronger in low end and fith gear but it's running lean. Popping at idle and at speed. hesitates, then pulls strong. Went to the local store for some cigs and a nip. Havn't had one for months. I left my camera in the shed. Pics to follow.
It lives! :woohoo:

Cool. I just pulled my cam cover and checked all my torque specs n clearances. I was surprised to find I could turn a few cylinder nuts at +330-360 in lbs.
All valve/shims are between .003" and .004" so I'll leave it.
1156 miles now.

Buttoning her up.

Couple marks at the top I can't get out. I have no idea what caused them.

Bad idea. Got stuck in the bores. Had to get them out and use the clamps alone.

I was so pissed, I forgot to show the deck height. It was even.

Tired of the end caps leaking. Was going to turn them around so the blue would show but they were discolored over time in the head. Had Manly stamped on them. I don't like advertising for someone else I don't know.

Had two tight valves. Had to use the 205 shim but the 235 I had on the intake needed a 220 and I have .002 clearance. Time for more shims. You can see the bat wing sticking out.
Going back together.

I wanted to take more time on this but my truck wouldn't start. The battery took a dump. It always happens when the weather changes. I'll dial it in tomorrow.

BTW, I got rid of the APE adjuster and put on my old stock manual adjuster. I don't trust it.

Changed the pilots from 60 to 65's. Also went to 130 mains up from 125's. Lean condition gone. I know it's a no no but I had it that way before and I wanted to get to town and back with no problems. It's over 100 today, so when it cools off, I'll check the plugs. If too rich, I'll go back to the 125's. Easy on these carbs. Sediment cap over the mains. B)

... Sediment cap over the mains.

So that is the reason for the rubber plug over the main jets?

Good to see it all getting buttoned up, nice to just do it rather than talking about it for years like me!

No, they have a cap under the mains like the early Z1's. Easy to switch jets but no overflows. The ring compressors would've worked if I didn't have as much sticking over the top. Next time I won't. The 903 bored didn't have a taper on the bottom, so getting the rings in I had to use beer can metal to take up that 1mm space between the clamp screw area. With these stock 1015 bores it got caught in the taper.
Live and learn.
I've been talking about doing this for two years. I lunched a new piston within 2000 miles. I didn't clean the oil peep hole and ran it out of oil. My fault. The valve guide seals were puking oil into the cylinders. You wouldn't have known it. It didn't smoke except at start up. A puff of smoke, then it ran like a raped ape. Fouled plugs tho. Finally back to where I started in 13. Better, the KZ bores don't get as hot and now it has a new valve train. Time to roll. :woohoo:
I used to be a heavy drinker. Depression I guess. I had to stop. My daughter and granddaughter came back from Oregon, I missed 4 years of her life, got the bike back on the road and have clocked more than 20,000 miles in two years going to visit them and riding up north on business. I'll take a nip (1/2 pint) on special occasions. Last night after I locked everything up and had dinner, I had my nip. I still have 1/2 left. Got a buzz and planned out what to do next.
They say the 33's are hard to get right. The pilots only come in .5 increments. Now that I have my jet drills, I can drill the 60's to 62.5 higher or lower. Three sizes in between. Allen's on the bowls and time to dial them in. B)
With what I learned from Miller so long ago, and the patience of an Oyster, I can finally get it right, Maybe. ;)
Steve

Bulbous filter I got from Z1E.

Swest, I've got a couple of these Emgo filters . Seem to work fine and don't melt. The clamps that come with them are impossible to use, though, I just use zip ties.

There's a special tool for those clamps. I've been using these for years. When I got those bulbous filters from Z1E I was pissed. The ones I run have a porous stone filter element and are clear so I can see if I'm getting any gas. The one shown above has a screen. Don't like it.
I got mine at the local Yamaha shop.

The Emgo filters have the same kind of sintered bronze element, not a screen. You can clean them, too, so theoretically it's a one-time purchase. You could also use clear fuel hose, but it also has some of the same longevity problems that the see through filters do. Whatever works.
