Today my buddy Paul started disassembly of the carbs. I pulled the rear wheel and brake system for disassembly and cleaning. I had to fill and use the parts washer because the bike is so dirty and greasy. The new seat came and I'll have to use the stock seat lock catch from the other seat.

Today I pulled the swingarm out and found dual needle bearings on each side. I read in the Clymer manual that only ZR-1's got the dual needle bearings. Did the LTD's get them too?

I've been busy pulling and cleaning up parts. I think I'm going to replace the Kerker with a Delkevik stainless exhaust. The Kerker is still solid and useable but it's got some war wounds, missing chrome, dents and dings. We put a Delkevik on our 80' Suzuki GS 1100E that we just finished. It is lighter and sounds great. I wish the Kerker looked better because I really wanted to use it.

I've been busy with cleaning 45 years of crap off the motor. Today we discovered that both front axle nuts are seized. My pneumatic impact gun didn't budge them. They are currently trying to soak up some Kroil. The next step will be heating up the nut. From the look of the tab washers on the brake rotor bolts it's likely the original wheel bearings so I need to get the axle out.

Did you try to loosen the fork leg axle clamps first?

Yep, we had the axle clamps loose. It has been way overtightened . I'm soaking in Kroil overnight. Tomorrow I'll try again, if it's still seized I'll try some heat. Sooner or later I'll get it apart.

I decided to pull the motor to sandblast and paint the frame. Too much rust and scratches to look past. I finally got the front axle apart, the axle had rusty threads on both sides. I also had to make a tool from an old tool to take apart the forks. I'm learning that my uncle was a little bit lax on doing maintenance.

Well after 3 rounds of cleaning the motor is starting to look like it is made from aluminum and not 45yo baked on grease and oil. I figure it will take another 3 or 4 rounds of cleaning to get it looking even close to good enough.Still waiting for the blast media to blast the frame. Everything else fits in the blast cabinet including the swingarm.

Today I started blasting the frame. I made it about 3/4ths of the way through it before I had to quit for the day. In the morning I'll go get another bag of blast media so I don't run out. If the weather cooperates it will be done tomorrow.
