Finally found a fairing I liked for the bike, a carbon fibre replica of that fitted to the modern Z900RS cafe. Making its mount in aluminium wasn't one of my better ideas, but got there in the end. If I ever make another it'll be made from steel. Had to make new headlight mounts to move the indicators, and space them out to clear the fairing. The painter who painted the bike is very busy as usual, so will be a few months before he can paint the fairing to match the rest of the bodywork.

Not much to add, the fairing was taken to the painter last October, still haven't got it back.. it seems most painters take forever. I have a keyless ignition system from Motogadget to install, that's waiting until I have the space to work on the bike. I have a couple of other Zeds that I'm working on at the moment. The build is on YT, the last vid on the 1170 is here

How would I find information about the 1170 top-end assembly?

What do you want to know?   Pistons are 1170 forged by Wossner, flowed head to suite the Mikuni RS34 carbs, cams are Gpz1100.

Which J motor did you start with, and does it have a welded crankshaft?

I mostly wonder how the cylinder installation went, since I have an 1170 top end coming together soon.
My research on the 1170 produced little information, except that a 75mm bore leaves minimal cylinder sleeve wall thickness.

I started with a bare set of cases from a GPz1100B1, then bought new and used parts to complete the engine. Originally the bike had 1130 pistons, but a ring was damaged when installing the pistons (during C19 lockdown so couldn't have help). Rings were only available as a complete set at a very high price. Therefore I had the barrel bored to 1170 and fitted with new forged pistons. The engine is essentially a B1, with a big valve flowed head and yes a welded crank. The crank was pressed apart, checked, then reassembled and welded web by web. When you bore out the cylinders you do lose the bevel at the base of the sleeve, which makes fitting the pistons/rings more difficult.

My mate rebuilt the crank for me, while I didn't film that, I do have a vid of another crank being trued..
